Random Beer Roundup - The Is it the Weekend Yet? Edition

Congratulations to our friends, Brent and Emily, who will be getting married instead of coming to the party. I guess you guys are off the hook for this one! We'll miss the whole TPB crew!

Are you tired of hearing about the Hoosier Beer Geek Third Anniversary Party? Well, we are tired of waiting for it, but we'll all have to make it a little bit longer and then we'll be back to regularly scheduled programming. We sincerely appreciate everyone's support and we thank you for joining us for the past three years on this craft beer journey.

If you have any news, reviews, info, etc. to share for our next Random Beer Roundup, contact us at hoosierbeergeek@gmail.com.

So, raise your glass and make a toast, this is the Random Beer Roundup.

What's Brewing

From Cari at Upland Brewing Co. in Bloomington:
This week Upland released our most recent seasonal: Oktoberfest! This traditional Bavarian-style malty lager has just a hint of sweetness and a nice amber hue. ABV: 6.8%, 16.5 IBU, 15.8 Starting Gravity. It is available on draught and in bottles. First place in town to get it is the Fox & Hound in Carmel with more places to come. Keep an eye out for it in your favorite liquor store, bar or restaurant.

If you live on the southside and don't have anything going on this Saturday (*ha ha, Cari), August 22, join us at Craig Park for WAMM Fest. Enjoy great local music and local food, even local beer and wine. Upland, Oaken Barrel, and Barley Island will all be there. More details at http://www.wammfest.com

Also, I'll be at HBG3 with our signature Wheat Ale and Bourbon Barrel Chocolate Stout. Hope to see you there!

From Mike at Granite City Brewing in Carmel:
Granite City will tap our Oktoberfest Sept. 28 at our Mug Club Party. The complimentary buffet is for Mug Club members and 1 guest.

At the Bar

From Patrick at Patrick's Kitchen and Drinks in Zionsville:
Big News around here is that we have a keg of Dreadnaught on tap right now......$7.50 for a 12oz glass.......cya!

From Lauren at Scottys Brewhouse:
Be on the lookout for Sam Adams Octoberfest which is coming to all locations soon!

Distribution News, Reviews, and Gossip

From Greg at Cavalier Distribution:
A new offering in the Imperial Mutiny Series of beers from Clipper City was released in very limited quantities for the first time this week. Clipper City Prosit is an Imperial Oktoberfest weighing in at 10% abv! It's a very limited, annual release and available only in 22oz bottles. It will be gone soon, so get it now while it's still available.

Clipper City's MarzHon
Oktoberfest/Marzen-style beer made its annual return to Indiana this week as well. This beer absolutely disappeared last year, and will most likely do the same this year.

There are two special release Left Hand beers popping up on draft in craft beer bars across the state. The first is the 400 LB Monkey IPA, a special release American IPA available only in very limited quantities on draft at this point. It's a traditional IPA with a generous hop profile, balanced in true Left Hand style by a strong malt back bone. The other is a CO home-brewer's winning recipe in a Pro Am that she was then able to brew at Left Hand called Chocolate Starfish. Chocolate Starfish is a strong, complex American Brown Ale. The aroma features subdued malt characteristics reminiscent of cola, roasted coffee, and chewy raisins. The flavor is slightly sweet, with rich malt characteristics, including chocolate, coffee, and slight smoke flavors. This maltiness stems from the use of a mix of English pale malt, melanoidin-rich malt and specialty malt, including chocolate malt. The sweetness is balanced by bitterness from hops and roasted malt. There is a slightly flowery and minty hop flavor from the use of Golding and Fuggle hops. The finish is slightly dry and roasty. Only a few kegs of this hit the state, so try it if you can find it!!

You will finally start to see more Jolly Pumpkin available in Indiana! With a more steady supply of Jolly Pumpkin, we should start to see more styles of it available more often. If you aren't familiar with Jolly Pumpkin, they are a small, artisan brewery in Dexter, MI. Jolly Pumpkin specializes in ceative, complex beers brewed using open-fermentation, oak-aging and bottle conditioning. They brew some of the most complex, ecclectic beers and are a must try if you have yet to experience their wonderful creations. www.jollypumpkin.com

Boulder Brew Co. Looking Glass Cold Hop Ale
was released this week and should be in most craft beer locations by this weekend. For those of you who haven't tried this, it's an amazing "British-style" Pale Ale that is released once a year and available on a very limited basis.

Shipyard Pumpkin
is back again!! This is always one of the most popular Pumpkin Pumpkin beers every year and it's back...enjoy!

Great Divide
has released both Hercules Double IPA & Yeti Imperial Stout in 4pks. Up to this point these two beers have only been available in 22oz bottles, but you will soon be able to find them in 4pks as well if you desire.

The Haggis Laddy the Celtic Red will be one only at the Celtic Music Fest held at The New Albany Ampitheater this Saturday 8/22. At the pub this weekend you'll see the return of 15b and Elector the first two beers from our Bank Street Brewery. Left Hand's Chocolate Starfish will be pouring after the Three Floyds Gorch Fock (helles Franconian-style lager) is depleted. Southern Tier Cherry Saison, Gulden Draak, Stone Levitation, and Brooklyn Cardoz are all pouring this weekend as well as our usual regulars, (full draft list at newalbanian.com) Every one get some sun and brews this weekend.

  2. They can't be serious...Chocolate Starfish?!? I mean, it sounds like a fine brew and all, but I can't believe they named it after a euphemism for the *anus*
