Sneak Peek: Scarlet Lane Brewing

Scarlet Lane Brewing Company is one of the many breweries slated to open in Indiana in 2014. That said, they are one of a handful of new breweries that I have been following closely since they were first mentioned at this time last year.

The Scarlet Lane team has done an amazing job in their ramp-up to opening. They have attended multiple events and embraced different members of the community throughout the last year.  If you go on their website, there is even a statement about how willing they are to help new breweries with contact information.

I consider Nick, Elise, and Doug new friends of mine. Chris Knott and I have known each other for a couple of years as well. Needless to say, I am really excited to unveil some of their branding and talk about their beers. Nick Servies and I had a quick chat about some of the branding that you see in this post.

Jake: The shield has an adventurous feel. It looks like the dog is walking down a winding path toward something. What's the story behind the shield?

Nick: The shield comes from the name Scarlet Lane. Our dog that moved with us to Portland was named Scarlet and the red lane through the woods fit with our vision of the brand having a gothic and pre-prohibition feel.

Jake: Does the dog eventually pee on the tree?

Nick: Scarlet would have shit on the tree.

Jake: I know you named your fermenters after family members and, as you mentioned, the brewery name is in homage to your dog, which is such an awesome concept. Who inspired the names Dorian, Vivian, and Silas?

Nick: We wanted to stay with the classic styling of the shield and a lamp. Oscar Wilde has been really influential to us, so Dorian is a tribute to the Dorian Gray character. The Dorian stout is going to change seasonally.  During the classic period, there were multiple poets named Silas, so the name fit well with our vision. Vivian was also a popular names in the late 1800s. We wanted to make the names of the beers short and memorable.

Jake: What can you tell me about the decision for the label colors and the tap handles?

Nick: We really want people to recognize the brewery first and then the beer. With the labels, the shield is the most prominent feature and then the color associated with the beer. The tap handles will all have the same street lamp feel to them, but the colors in the lamp will change for the beer.

Jake: Is the party on May 14th at Fire by the Monon public?

Nick: Yes. People can RSVP through our Facebook Page for the event. Our plan is to have the Dorian Stout and the Saison De Silas available for the event. We brewed Dorian on the 22nd and Silas on the 24th, so they should be ready.

I am definitely planning to be at Fire by the Monon on the 14th. If you can't make it to that event, keep an eye out for the Scarlet Lane tap handles and give their beer a try.

Books & Brews In Indianapolis

NEW BREWS:
Shogun Soba Ale (5.1%, 23 IBU) - Our Soba Ale is an amber ale brewed with buckwheat, giving it a salty-sweetness that we think could have calmed the feudal Japan chronicled in the James Clavell classic.

Hop’s Cradle DIPA (7.2%, 85 IBU, on Nitro) - There may be no cradle, but the hops are easy to find in this double-IPA named by one of our Kickstarter backers. Heaping additions of Centennial and Cascade hops highlight this tasty concoction.

Weekend Events:
Friday - Open at 11am for lunch, Kid's Story Time at noon, live music from Jen Midkiff and Debbie Gates of "Wild Mercy" from 8pm-10pm, after hours event at 11pm to be announced (stay tuned, e-mail suggestions to jason@booksnbrews.com)

Indiana Lagers You Should Be Drinking

I've been saying for a while now that too many craft beer lovers ignore lagers. Yet I can understand why this is. Just about all of us started our beer-drinking lives with an American adjunct lager like Budweiser. When we graduated to craft beer, we did so because we were seeking more flavor. And over time, our palates craved more and more intensity.

I was once this kind of craft beer drinker. But now, I'm in the same camp as Jeff Alworth of Beervana when he says that some of us craft beer drinkers have unnecessarily confined ourselves to a love of radical beer styles when we should try to appreciate the simpler styles.

We're into freedom of choice in this country. I can't force you to like certain beers, nor would I even try. We all have different palates after all. However, I can encourage you break out of the rut into which you may have fallen. I can encourage you to give lagers another chance.

Like ales, lagers vary in flavor profile, from malt-forward Bocks to hop-forward Pilsners to smoky Rauchbiers. My favorite style is the Vienna or Amber Lager, which is a copper-colored beer with a prevalent caramel malt base and a crisp hop finish. This style is exemplified by Great Lakes Brewing's Eliot Ness Amber Lager (which unfortunately isn't available in central Indiana). I'm also partial to the straw-colored Bohemian Pilsner with its spicy hop notes and clean malt finish. Among the better American-brewed Bohemian Pilsners is Oskar Blues' Mama's Little Yella Pils.

Luckily for us Hoosiers, Indiana breweries are producing some excellent lagers. Here are a few that we think are worth seeking out:

Fountain Square Workingman's Pilsner - The 2012 Hoosier Beer Geek Beer of the Year.
Outliers Blau Machen Pilsner - One of the flagship beers from Ted Miller's new brewing venture.
People's Pilsner - A Hoosier Beer Geek favorite.
Sun King Oktoberfest - When Märzen season arrives, put this in your bier stein.
Three Floyds Gorch Fock - This seasonal Helles rolls out during the summer.
Thr3e Wise Men Hot for Teacher Ms. Doppelbock - Silver Medal Winner, 2014 World Beer Cup, Category 41: German-Style Doppelbock or Eisbock

Books & Brews In Indianapolis
News:
Books & Brews will have new hours effective Monday the 7th. We will now be open until 10pm Monday through Thursday and 11pm on Friday and Saturday.

Daytime Events:
Weekdays from 12pm-1pm is Kid’s Story Time - come on by and huddle up with a few stories from books in our children’s section. We will have games and other activities for the whole family, too! Coming soon: kid’s arts & crafts and music classes.

Dark Matter Coffee at Dark Lord Day 2014

When Drinking Craft wrote about Three Floyd’s move from partnering with Intelligentsia Coffee to partnering with Dark Matter Coffee, the speculation began immediately in some beer circles. Would there be glassware as there had been in the past? Would the beans be available for sale at the event? I recently reached out to Kyle Hodges, Dark Matter’s “Minister of Propaganda”, to get some more details since Dark Lord Day 2014 is next weekend. He was nice enough to share a few of the details of what you can expect from Dark Matter at this year's Dark Lord Day:

Jake: You guys seem to enjoy barrel-aging the beans, but you mentioned barrel-aged iced coffee as well. What barrel-aged variants are you releasing and can you tell me what barrels were used?

Kyle: We have three variants of our Black Splash Iced Coffee:
Burundi Dukorere Ikawa aged in a Koval Lion's Pride barrel.
Rwanda Misozi Kopaki aged in a Woodford Reserve barrel.
Black Hole Necromancer, our Unicorn Blood Espresso blend aged in a Remy Martin Cognac barrel

We will also pulling espresso shots of Ethiopia Idido aged in a Letherbee Absinthe barrel and Unicorn Blood. The Unicorn Blood is not barrel-aged.

Jake:  I know you mentioned some glassware options. What can you tell me about the plan for those? Is everyone going to get handed one or are they strictly for sale?

Kyle: Yes, we are releasing 800 snifters split between two different colors. Not everyone will be able to get one, unfortunately, but we are still looking to release them systematically to try and be as fair as possible. We are keeping the colors a secret until Dark Lord Day.

In addition to the snifters, we will have our classic diner mugs and an extremely badass shirt for sale. No limits per person on either of these.

Jake: Which beans, or blend of beans, were used in Dark Lord 2014?

Kyle: This is our Unicorn Blood espresso blend, part of the DMC portfolio, aged in Remy Martin Cognac barrels

Jake: You mentioned Black Hole Necromancer. With a description like “Dark Matter Coffee introduces our Cognac Barrel-Aged Unicorn Blood espresso blend. This warlock's elixir is strong enough to summon the spirits of the dead and is sacrificially prepared for Dark Lord Day. Brewed and bottled by the hands of Dark Matter Coffee, cursed and waxed by the vikings at 3 Floyds, this limited edition coffee will be available only at Dark Lord Day. “ it sounds pretty awesome. Will you be selling bottles for carry-out at Dark Lord Day?

Kyle: There will be 800 bottles of the Black Hole for sale at DLD. They will not be opened at purchase and the customer is free to do with them whatever they want. These are not limited to one per person.

Jake: Specifically on Black Hole Necromancer, were the beans aged in barrels and then extracted or did you extract the coffee and age the liquid in barrels?

Kyle: For BHN, we aged the green beans in the barrel and then extracted. However, for the BA Dark Lord, we brewed the BHN into the barrel.

So, there you have it coffee drinking beer folk. Go find the people from Dark Matter during Dark Lord Day. I have had their Chocolate City iced coffee. It comes in a 22oz bottle and I really enjoyed it. They take extra steps to make sure that it is shelf-stable at room temperature and are doing some really cool things to push what many coffee drinkers consider “normal”.
