HBG5: A Very Small Photo Gallery

We'd like to thank everyone who participated in Saturday's HBG5 party. Our sponsors were more than generous, our crowd was fun and well-behaved (considering how much beer we went though, that was greatly appreciated), and a good time was had by all.

As it turns out, I was too busy drinking at HBG5 to take many photos. And amongst the 20 or so I did take, about 15 of them are of Jason, so I must have had enough to drink. In any case, here are a few shots from Saturday's event.

We're interested to hear your thoughts on the event. Did you have a favorite beer? How was the food? Any suggestions (apart from more bathrooms)?

So you're attending HBG5: What to know

This is a cloud in a circle in a box with some rays or something.

Hello HBG5 attendee.

Congratulations on being a fantastic person.

HBG5 is a pretty low-key event, apart from the excellent beer and food. There are a few things we'd like you to know ahead of time in order to maximize your experience.

1) We sold 4 Designated Driver tickets. Out of 150 tickets. We also have a very large quantity of beer. While this isn't an unusual ration for a beer event, we do want to make sure everyone plays it safe. Please plan ahead for post-party transportation. If you're going to use a cab, pre-load that number into your phone. If you're having someone pick you up, make sure plans are in place. If you're planning on driving home, please drink at a rate that will make that legally viable. We want you to have a good, worry-free time. Please do your part to make that happen.

2) We're probably going to be short on seating. You've probably been to Sun King - there aren't many (or any) chairs. If you're planning on spending 5 hours with us, you'll probably want to sit at some point. Please feel free to bring a folding chair with you.

3) Tickets are sold out. That means no tickets at the door.

That's pretty much it. See you tomorrow evening.

HBG5 featuring Cavalier Distributing

Well if you haven't heard, this event is now sold out. Oh, and there's more beer. Whole cases of bottles of beer. Like these from..

Cavalier Distributing

Did you know that Cavalier Distributing doesn't really have a logo? Or that they don't have a website? That's ok, more traffic for us. (And if you guys need a logo, feel free to use the one above.)

It's also ok because they're awesome people with fantastic beer. Like the seven cases of bottles below that will be appearing at HBG5.

Great Divide Belgian Yeti
Belgian Style Yeti is a delicious new blend of brewing traditions--all the malt-driven roastiness of our Yeti Imperial Stout with characteristic spice and fruit notes imparted by our special Belgian yeast strain. Belgian Style Yeti is a one-of-a-kind beer as mysterious as the mythical creature himself. Impossible? See for yourself; you'll be a believer, too. 9.5% ABV

Stone Brewing Co. Sublimely Self Righteous Ale
First brewed in 2007 as the Stone 11th Anniversary Ale, this ale was an instant hit. With us. Other folks with great taste loved it too, but we were focused on how much we liked it, and we felt it was truly sublime. That euphoria didn't last long though, as it was soon replaced with the grim reality that when we sold out of it there wouldn't be any more. For us. And that was simply unacceptable. So, we are now blessing ourselves, and you the enlightened, with this ale. Thusly, you may now revel in your own self-righteousness as you see fit with this glorious example of ours. You are genuinely welcome, as it is our pleasure.

Lexington Brewing Co KY Bourbon Ale
Award winning Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale is a unique sipping beer with the distinctive nose of a well-crafted bourbon. Our Kentucky Ale is aged for up to 6 weeks in freshly decanted bourbon barrels from some of Kentucky’s finest distilleries.

Subtle yet familiar flavors of vanilla and oak are imparted to this special ale as it rests in the charred barrels. Pleasantly smooth and robust, Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale may also be served as an aperitif or after dinner drink.

Founders Cerise
You'll have a soft spot for this one. Using only fresh Michigan tart cherries, this beauty tantalizes with intense flavors combined with a no hesitation malt bill. Adding fresh cherries at five separate stages of fermentation achieves the ultimate balance between tartness and sweetness.

The Bruery Trade Winds Tripel
Our Summer seasonal, Trade Winds Tripel is a Belgian-style Golden Ale with a Southeast Asian twist. Instead of using candi sugar (typical for such a beer), we use rice in the mash to lighten the body and increase the gravity, and spice with Thai Basil. The result is an aromatic, digestible and complex beer made for a lazy summer evening.

ABV: 8%, IBU: 25, SRM: 5

Two Brothers Hop Juice
Hop Juice is a powerful Imperial IPA. It is brewed to 9.9% ABV, 100.1 IBU's, and dry hopped with a pound of hops per barrel. Hop Juice has a very strong aroma of pine and citrus. This hefty beer is balanced at the start with some nice caramel and brown sugar notes. Then it has a massive hop flavor and bitterness with some complex fruity characters.

Tyranena Brewers Gone Wild Hop Whore
Overpowering perfume. Dripping with luscious hop flavor. And, oh what a body. You're in for one helluva experience!

Please remember that this list is tentative and subject to change based on availability. We will keep you updated if anything changes.

HBG5 featuring World Class Beverages

You may have thought we'd given up on posting these - but no! To be honest, we still aren't 100% sure about some of the remaining beers. But we do have a few more details. Next up:

World Class Beverages

For as long as we've been having these parties, we've had cooperation and participation by our friends at World Class Beverages. This year is no different.

Hair of the Dog Adam
Adam is top fermented and cold conditioned to give it a rich and mellow smoothness. The unique garnet color is derived from specially roasted barley, and the intense hop profile is provided by the use of only the finest whole hop flowers. It is 8% alcohol by weight (10% by volume).

And..

Boulevard / Deschutes Collaboration #2 White IPA
Combining Boulevard’s expertise at making Belgian-style witbiers with Deschutes’ skill at brewing hop-forward ales, this beer puts a new spin on the idea of collaborative brewing. Working from a single recipe, brewmasters Steven Pauwels of Boulevard and Larry Sidor of Deschutes have produced two separate beers, more than 1,600 miles apart.

Color (EBC) 10 Bitterness (IBUs) 42 Original Gravity (Plato) 17 Terminal Gravity (Plato) 3.4 Alcohol (ABV) 7.4%

About HBG5:
It will be held Saturday, August 27th, starting at 6pm. Sun King Brewing will again be hosting us at their brewery at 135 N. College Avenue, Indianapolis. Tickets are $30 (plus $1.99 for online fees) for regular tickets and $15 (plus $1.99 for online fees) for designated drivers. Tickets are available online only and limited to just 150 paying customers. Like beer festivals? Don't like crowds? This is your event. And yes, the tickets are on sale now.

If you didn't attend last year, you can see what you missed here. But if you did attend last year, you'll find it to be similar. We can't promise that Jason will be performing from Cats (or will have a mustache). But here is what we have so far (please note that all of this is subject to change).

Regular attendees will receive a commemorative tasting glass that can be used to sample various quality beers from our favorite Indiana breweries as well as a few other breweries. Additionally, you'll be able to select a few larger pours of your favorite beers. Designated drivers will have a selection of non-alcoholic beverages such as soda, pop, cola... whatever regional term you like. And bottled water, of course.

All attendees will get to enjoy food from Papa Roux.

HBG5 featuring Crown Brewing Company

You may have thought we'd given up on posting these - but no! To be honest, we still aren't 100% sure about some of the remaining beers. But we do have a few more details. Next up:

Crown Brewing

DerALEr
Crown's version of an American Wheat is brewed for all of the thirsty 1st and 3rd Monday bikeriders. It has the same grain bill as our German Style Weizenhammer Weiss (over 50% wheat malt), however it is made with our house ale yeast instead of imported Hefe-Weiss yeast. The only other thing different is it happens to have 100 IBU's of Summit hops. What that means is that it is very hoppy, just like the sweaty cyclists.
4.8%ABV 100 IBU's

HBG5 featuring Bier Brewery

The lineup for our fifth anniversary is a closely guarded secret. Why? Because we're bad salespeople. NO! Because we like to build anticipation. It's fun watching people freak out. And we think we've got a freak-out worthy lineup coming together. Next up:

Bier Brewery

Two from Darren

Farmgirl (Saison)
Farmgirl is a classic example of a Saison running at 5.9% ABV, 19 IBUs and 3.5 SRM. She is well balanced and slightly tart and peppery, and she's very thirst quenching with a slight sourness. She will satisfy your every desire, as far as a nice Saison goes.

AND

Calypso IPA
Calypso IPA weighs in at 7% ABV, "enough" IBUs, and "beautiful" on the SRM scale. We used 95% of a new hop called Calypso and 5% of other sticky, resiny, stinky leafy non-smokable hops. As with all of our biers, Calypso has a nice malt backbone to prevent this beauty from coming across thin and watery. We used a brand new space aged brewing technique to ensure perfect balance and harmony.

Please remember that this list is tentative and subject to change based on availability. We will keep you updated if anything changes.

The lineup for our fifth anniversary is a closely guarded secret. Why? Because we're bad salespeople. NO! Because we like to build anticipation. It's fun watching people freak out. And we think we've got a freak-out worthy lineup coming together.

Next up:

Broad Ripple Brewpub

The Broad Ripple Brewpub beer appearing at HBG5 is an either/or. We made two choices.. and we're still waiting to hear.

It will either be:

Wobbly Bob
Light copper in color, this pale ale has a great citrus aroma from generous cascade hopping.

or

Dual Citizenship Ale
With a cooperative blend of both English and American hops and English yeast this lightly-colored amber pale ale has high hop aroma and flavor.

In either case, here's something a little hoppy for you, to go along with the Naughty Girl (Belgian IPA), 12 Cycle (12 hop dryhoped IPA), Nunmoere Black (70 IBUs), Rad Red (Upland's hoppiest regular offering (apart from their DIPA)), and Osiris Pale Ale (an "assertively hopped west coast style pale ale").

Next up:

Flat12 Bierwerks

Two. And they're hoppy.

12 Cycle IPA
This beer starts with Flat12's Half Cycle IPA, which weighs in at 104 IBUs.
The Half Cycle is so named due to its marriage of single and double IPA characteristics. In baseball parlance, a single and double is half of “the cycle”, and this IPA is a heavy hitter. It’s a single IPA, hopped like a double, with an over-the-top hop character that’s a bit spicy, citrusy, piney, you make the call. Light in color, but not on flavor, Half Cycle is dry hopped with a pound of high alpha American hops in every barrel.
Then they dry-hopped it using 12 different hops.

Nunmoere Black ABA (American Black Ale)
Here's a beer that's 6.0% ABV and 70 IBUs.
Don’t let the color deceive you, this beer is lighter than it looks and packs a big hop punch.

-Loaded with 5 different American hops, Nunmoere is a complex blend of roasted malts and fragrant hops.
So there's something a little hoppy for you, to go along with the Naughty Girl (Belgian IPA), Rad Red (Upland's hoppiest regular offering (apart from their DIPA)), and Osiris Pale Ale (an "assertively hopped west coast style pale ale").

HBG5 featuring Thr3e Wise Men Brewing Company

The lineup for our fifth anniversary is a closely guarded secret. Why? Because we're bad salespeople. NO! Because we like to build anticipation. It's fun watching people freak out. And we think we've got a freak-out worthy lineup coming together.

Hoosier Beer Geek Double Brown
Jason explains:
Not many people know that Scott Wise and I have been each other's gambling nemesis for a number of years. It started when we were a part of the same fantasy football league. He selected Ryan Leaf as his quarterback in his rookie year. Went down in flames. A couple of years later, our horses were racing against each other in the Kentucky Derby. My horse, "Beer for My Horses," beat out his horse, "Frat Boy Fury", by three lengths. And just a few years ago, we ran into each other in the back room of a seedy Yorktown bar where an illegal game of Xíng Háishì Bùxíng was being played. I yet again came away victorious.

Furious and desperate for a win, he offered a bet in the Miami Heat/Dallas Mavericks NBA Championship. He selected the Heat to win. I knew that "King James" was cursed so I took him up on it. If he won, he received Mike (known in the Twittersphere as @hoosierbeergeek) for his own "personal" biddings. If I won, he had to brew a beer of my choosing at Thr3e Wise Men. He said "Challenge Accepted!"

It should come as a surprise to no one that I won. Yet again. What do I plan to do with the Hoosier Beer Geek Double Brown? Drink it. And after every sip, I will yell, "Hey Scotty, victory tastes so sweet!" I'll probably tweet it too. Or buy a billboard. I'm not sure yet. But I'll be enjoying it at the tapping party at 3WM as well as at the HBG5 Anniversary Party on Saturday, August 27th.

All I know is that the next time he bet's against me, it will be a big time bet.
The true story is that Scotty and Jason made a bet, but the beer story goes a little deeper. Shortly before the bet took place, I had read this piece from The Atlantic, and it got me to thinking about how it had been a while since I had a really nice brown.

After winning, we sat down with Omar and Scotty and described what we wanted - big chocolate character, big maltiness, and toffee - but not any roasty or coffee character, nothing that would push the beer into porter territory. Omar had already started a recipe, but tweaked it to our specifications, and let us know that a healthy dose of hops would be added to bring the beer into double or imperial brown territory.

We haven't had it yet - hopefully we'll be trying it along with you at both the tapping party and at HBG5.

Raspberry Coffee Stout (draft)
Our Raspberry Coffee Stout is brewed with raspberry puree and Kaldi's coffee to create the perfect dessert beer.

Here's the thing - you might find this beer around Indy. But there's a pretty good chance you either won't find it in time, or that it never makes it here. And I've got a pretty strong feeling you're never going to find it on a tap handle.

Except at HBG5.

Upland Brewing Company

Two from Upland

Rad Red
American Amber Ale combines the timelessness of European ales as well as the innovativeness of American breweries, making it a uniquely new world take on a classic style. Our Rad Red Amber Ale’s extra hop kick takes this tradition of innovation a step further. Its solid hop presence, which comes from 100% American hops, is balanced by crunchy Caramel Malt, giving it a perfect amber color and chewy malt character. We kept the rest simple, using only Upland’s own yeast ale blend and pure southern Indiana water for this drinkable yet refreshingly radical brew.
ABV: 5.6 IBUs: 55 SG: 14 SRM: 14.6

Mother's Milk (UpCup Homebrew Competition Winner)
Just like your mama used to give you! The winner of our 2011 UpCup Homebrew Competition features unfermented lactose (the sugar found in milk) and residual dextins that five this robust beer extra body along with sweetness to contrast the roasted flavors imparted by dark malts.

New Albanian Brewing Company

Naughty Girl (Struise Colab / Blonde India Pale Ale)
In May of 2011, Urbain Coutteau of De Struise Brouwers (Oostvleteren, Belgium) visited Louisville as the guest of Lori Beck and Tyler Trotter, the founders of Louisville Beer Store and Holy Grale.

After numerous liquid discussions between Urbain, Lori and Tyler, a plan arose for collaboration brews, one at each of New Albanian Brewing Company’s two locations, as described below.

Overview: Brewed at Bank Street Brewhouse (May 8, 2011) by Urbain, David Pierce and Jared Williamson, Naughty Girl is a Belgian India Blonde Ale brewed to a dry finish, with medium body and a very aromatic American hop profile. 74% of the IBUs are from the mash hops and later hop additions.

Malts: Rahr 2-Row, Rahr Premium Pils, Castle (Belgian) Aromatic, CaraPils

Hops: Cascade in the mash (13 lbs whole), two bittering additions of Galena, two middle additions of Golding, late addition of Cascade, Cascade hops (15 lbs pellet) for warm dry-hopping

Yeast: De Struise House Ale

ABV: 6% IBU: 69

This one isn't the easiest beer to get. Luckily I asked way back in May.

You may recall that we interviewed former New Albanian (now Schlafly) brewer Jared Williamson about the beer back then. Here's that interview.

This seems so familiar..

The lineup for our fifth anniversary is a closely guarded secret. Why? Because we're bad salespeople. NO! Because we like to build anticipation. It's fun watching people freak out. And we think we've got a freak-out worthy lineup coming together. First up:

Sun King Brewing
Indianapolis, Indiana

FREAK OUT!

Okay, so that's no big surprise. I mean, we are having our party at Sun King, so logically we would have their beer there. But since they are hosting us, it seems only natural to introduce them first. Here are some of the beers you can expect to find at HBG5 with descriptions from the brewery:

Wee Mac Scottish Ale
Style: Scottish Brown Ale

Wee Mac is a Scottish style Brown Ale. Fermented at cooler than normal temperatures to mimic the climate of Scotland, Wee Mac is an easy drinking brown ale that has a nice hazelnut character with rich toffee undertones. Hops are used sparingly in this beer and serve only to help balance the sweetness of the malt.

Awards
2010 Indiana Brewers Cup Gold Metal - English Brown Ale

ABV: 5.4% IBU: 23

Note: Hoosier Beer Geek reviewed this beer, giving it a very respectable 3.66 mug rating.

Bitter Druid ESB
Style: Extra Special Bitter

The Bitter Druid ESB is a new twist on an old favorite. Our Americanized ESB blends American 2-row pale malt with choice British specialty malts to create a rich malt start that is followed by a crisp, American hop finish. This beer is a wonderful gateway to the world of hops due to its delicate balance and rich array of flavors.

Awards
2010 Indiana Brewers Cup Gold Metal - English Pale Ale

ABV: 5.8% IBU: 43

Osiris Pale Ale
Style: American Pale Ale

Osiris Pale Ale is an assertive American Pale and is not meant for the timid. Crafted by our Brewers for our Brewers, Osiris blends three choice varieties of American hops to create a spicy, citrus hop punch that is sure to satisfy any hop head. Every batch of Osiris is dry-hopped towards the end of fermentation for maximum hop flavor, aroma and character.

Awards
2010 Indiana Brewers Cup Bronze Metal - American Ale

ABV: 5.6% IBU: 50

Hoosier Beer Geek also reviewed this beer, but if you haven't had it yet or don't know what you're in for you might be living in a cave buried under a rock hidden atop a mountain.

Sunlight Cream Ale
Style: Cream Ale

Sunlight Cream Ale is our most approachable beer and is a great introduction to the world of Craft Beer. Cream Ale is one of the earliest styles of American beer, but was virtually wiped out by American lager brewers. Our Cream Ale is an all malt beer. This isn't the end of the Sun King beers, but just a first taste. Later, we will announce other Sun King beers that you will be able to enjoy at HBG5. So keep an eye out for that.

Please remember that this list is tentative and subject to change based on availability. We will keep you updated if anything changes.

Menu coming shortly. There will be vegetarian options.

And what's a party without gifts? And by gifts, I mean us giving stuff to you! That's right, prizes and giveaways and all sorts of stuff.

We're still filling in all the details, but if you've been to our events, you know it is a good time. And all tickets will be sold online. Tickets are not available at Sun King nor will they be available at the door. So don't miss out.

There are more details coming soon, but here's a reminder of the participating breweries/distributors to wet your whistle -

Barley Island Brewing Company
Bee Creek Brewing Company
Bier Brewery
Broad Ripple Brewpub
Brugge Brasserie
Cavalier Distributing
Crown Brewing Company

If you're wondering what Amy Winehouse has to do with any of this, the answer is nothing.
