Random Beer Roundup - The Weekend Edition

If you forgot to file your taxes yesterday, what beer would you have while waiting for the Feds to come pick you up?

*****
Congrats to the five breweries who took seven awards home from the World Beer Cup last weekend.

Crown Brewing Co - (Bronze, Industrial Porter)
Rock Bottom Brewery - Indianapolis (Bronze, Subzero)
Sun King Brewing Co - (Bronze, Dominator Dopplebock) (Silver, Sunlight Cream Ale)
Three Floyds Brewing Co - (Gold, Behemoth)
Upland Brewing Co. - (Silver, Oktoberfest) (Bronze, Helios Pale Ale)

*****
Looks like it will be a little chilly for the Indians home opener tonight. You may need a glove to hold those new cans of Sun King beer at the park.

*****
If you were lucky enough to score Dark Lord Day tickets, you should be receiving them in the mail this week.

*****
If there is something coming up that is not listed, we would love to hear about it. News, reviews, info, etc., to share for our next Random Beer Roundup can be submitted to hoosierbeergeek@gmail.com. Don't see your favorite craft beer establishment? Let them know you'd like to see them here!

What's Brewing

From Greg at Lafayette Brewing Co. in Lafayette:
On tap at LBC this weekend: Ouiatenon Wit Bier; Prophet's Rock Pale Ale; East Side Bitter; Pipers' Pride Scottish Ale; Tippecanoe Common Ale; Eighty-Five; Black Angus Oatmeal Stout; How Now Brown Ale and our latest release- Star City Lager. We're also dispensing cask-conditioned Digby's Irish Stout from the hand pull.

On the entertainment side, LBC is extremely honored to host legendary guitarist, Bill Kirchen, and his band, Too Much Fun, this Saturday, 8 pm. This Friends of Bob production should make for a memorable evening. In the words of the Austin American-Statesman:

"Bill Kirchen rules. It's just that simple. [His] no-nonsense diesel guitar attack, powered by great booming, bottom-heavy licks still covered with axle grease, is undoubtedly the real thing, scattering scorching guitar runs in all directions, it's all immediate, in your face and more than a little dangerous.”

From Clayton at Sun King Brewing Co. in Indianapolis:
Westy ICC/IPA is out NOW (as of the publication of the RBRU)
7% 75 IBUs of German Noble Hop Goodness

Cans are available in the Tasting Room and will start to show up in bars and restaurants next week. We won't have enough beer produced to roll out to Liquor/Package Stores until the beginning of May... But when the time comes you can look for Sun King Cans at 21st Amendment, Kahn's, Parti Pak, Goose the Market, Crown Downtown, Mass Ave. Wine Shop, Vine & Table and few other yet to be determined stores strategically located on the East, West, Northwest and Northeast sides of town!

We won two World Beer Cup Medals this year! Silver for Sunlight Cream Ale in the Blonde or Golden Ale Category and Bronze for Dominator Dopplebock in the German-Style Dopplebock or Eisbock category. All 8 of our entries this year were submitted in Cans!

We are very excited to announce that Sun King will be adding two new people to our team!
Adrian Ball will be leaving the Ram/Big Horn Brewery Downtown at the end of the month and will be coming on full time May 2nd.

Dustin Boyer will be leaving Spencer's Stadium Tavern on April 23rd (Dustin's Last Pour Party will be held at Spencer's that night and will feature lots of Sun King Beer) and will be coming on board full time, after some much needed R&R, June 1st.

Both of these fine gents are fully qualified professional brewers who have been long time friends of both Dave and Clay. The addition of their passion, drive, energy and enthusiasm will help propel Sun King to the next level...

From Charles at Upland Brewing Co. in Bloomington:
Congrats to our fellow Indiana brewers that took home awards from the World Beer Cup!

Thank you for helping us make Helios and Oktoberfest award winning beers. Without Indiana's thirst for good beer and the support of the craft beer community, these brews never would have been possible.

If you want to check out Thunder over Louisville this Saturday, there's no reason to cross the river. Upland will be pouring beer at two Jeffersonville events: Thunder Craft Beer Festival at Buckhead Mountain Grill (2-11pm) and Thunder at Sonny's Island Grill (11pm-3am).

On Saturday the 24th, those of you who can't make it to Dark Lord Day can find the Upland festival bus at the Story Inn Wine Fair in Nashville, IN. We're hoping to open the eyes of wine drinkers to the flavor and diversity of craft beer, and we could use a few staunch supporters to get the party started.

Starting Monday, we're shipping Maibock out of the brewery. Expect to see it on draught and in six packs later in the week. If that isn't enough, Bourbon Barrel Warmer will be released in 22oz bombers the following week!

From Corrie at Goose the Market in Indianapolis:
New in the cellar at Goose the Market...
Pinkies up! Get your man servant (what?) to pour Brooklyn Brewery’s latest release. Their Summer Ale, a self-described “light dinner ale” or “luncheon ale” that, yes, they actual suggest pairing with quiche (what?). But seriously, folks, this refreshing brew has enough yeast and citrus flavor to keep it interesting, no matter where you put your pinkie.

Previously available only in ceramic crocks, Rogue’s XS Imperial Red now travels in cute—um, I mean, handsome—and *affordable* nipper glass bottles.

The patron saint of all two year olds, St. Boisterous—a full bodied lager—is in from Victory Brewing Company.

Avast, me hearties…Anchor Brewing Company be releasin’ their summer bRrrrrrrew, a malted-wheat. (I don’t care what people say…pirates (and all references to seafaring, including anchoRrrrrs) are cool.)

From Patrick at Crown Liquors in Downtown, Indianapolis:
New this week at Crown Wine and Spirits- Ohio and Delaware - Downtown Indy

La Caracole Ambrée and Nostradamus St. Bernardus Prior 8 Abbaye des Rocs Triple Impériale Oud Beersel Kriek Allgäuer Cambonator Doppelbock Weltenburger Kloster Asam Bock

and the return of Kurpiowski Royal Mead, Brew Dog Dogma, and Verhaeghe Duchesse De Bourgogne.

Also, rather than our regular Friday tasting, we'll be hosting our 1st Annual Spring Taster from 4pm-8pm! We will have over 30 brews: new releases, new to our state breweries, Spring and Summer brews, rare brews that don’t usually see the shelves, and probably some vintage
stuff from "The Sprinkle Stash." Upland will be here with a growler of Infinite Wisdom and maybe a few Lambics. We will also have over 50 wines, a variety of meats and cheeses to pair with the beer and wine, some artisanal liquors and a mixologist for some classic drinks. Door
prizes and much more! And the best part is that it's all free!
That's today, the 16th, from 4-8pm. Stop in and say Hi!

From Jake at United Package Liquors in Broadripple:

Everyone is welcome to join us for a beer tasting on Thursday April 22nd 5pm to 7pm. We will have several craft beers to choose from including Founders and Stone products.

Sierra Navada 30th Aniversary Fritz & Ken’s Ale

Coming soon:

Tyranena
Two Brothers Hop Juice

From Eric at 21st Amendment in Broad Ripple:
This is the greatest job I've ever had. I get to try at least one new beer a day.

Right now my favorite seasonal beer is the Dogfish Head Aprihop. This is a perfect summertime IPA. It's got the nicely balanced malt and hops that we've come to expect from a great IPA integrated with a nice light apricot feel from start to finish. The apricot really makes it perfect for a sunny day.

We've also got 17 different Bell's beers on our shelves. These beers include our last 8 bottles of the wonderful Batch 9000, 5 different varieties of Stout, Bell's Sparkling Ale and Bell's Third Coast Old Ale.

Don't forget about our weekly free beer tastings. At my store in Broadripple we taste Fridays at 5, this week it'll be World Beer Cup medal winners. David's store at 71st and N. Keystone tastes Saturdays at 2.

Stop in and try a new beer!
From the Distributors

From Greg at Cavalier Distribution:

NEW IN THIS WEEK:
Clipper City Letter of Marque Hop Rye Porter – Winners from our 2009 Letter of Marque Homebrew Competition will work along side our brewers to create this one time special release. Letter of Marque will feature a different beer every year selected from our national homebrew competition. Historically, a Letter of Marque was a document that made a Pyrate a legitimate professional.

Hence, our Letter of Marque makes a home brewer a legitimate professional as well!
Hop Rye Porter is an imperial Porter brewed with both rye & barley malt and a copious amount of hops, resulting in a marriage between roasted malt & chocolate notes and citrus notes with hop bitterness and a crisp finish from the rye. Letter of Marque is available for a limited time only in 22oz bottles.

EVENTS:

Trip Opportunities
From Ron Smith:

Guided Beer Vacations to Belgium and Germany!

Now through the end of April (about the next 3 weeks) is the timeframe where I need to get firm commitments from people. You can read about my Belgium Trip here (http://www.beermba.com/belgium-beer-vacations.php) and my Germany Trip here (http://www.beermba.com/germany-beer-vacations.php). There is also some general information here (http://www.beermba.com/beer-vacations.php). These are great trips designed to maximize the enjoyment of beer lovers that want to see these parts of the world without all the stress, planning, etc. While being primarily beer-focused, we also break it up and visit many of the usual tourist sites as well. Thus, even non-beer lovers will really enjoy them, but the true beer lover will be in heaven on these trips.
