It's not advertising - it's public service.

Just got an email that seems worthy of passing along to the general public:
Sarah to hoosierbeergeek

Hi beer geeks.

I haven't seen this on your blog yet - but maybe it's worth a shout-out? I am pretty much addicted this place, but I'm worried that if more beer lovers don't support it, it won't be around too much longer. Can you help?

The word is "pissed" if you're having trouble. I was.

Anyone that's into beer has a friend in Mike DeWeese, so we're more than happy to do anything we can to help. $2.50 pints? How can we resist?

  1. If you guys haven't been since they changed from BadaBoomz, I'd recommend a visit.

The food isn't Yats, but it's not bad. You won't be hurting Joe over at Yats if you're going to J. Gumbo's for beers and happen to eat while you are there. You would have done the same thing at BadaBoomz.

  2. So BadaBoomz is now J Gumbo's?
What is the smoking status of the place?

  3. I'm pretty sure that it's back to a no smoking establishment

  4. Was there last night and the server picked up an ashtray off our table - so I assume that means smoking is allowed. :-)

  5. Did the Badaboomz on the west side become J Gumbos as well? I would assume so. Also, does anyone know if the beer selection at that location is at all comparable to the downtown location?

  6. Thanks whoever made the ashtray comment, that was educational.

I wish HBG would list whether these places are smoking or not when they write about them. I absolutely do not(can't actually) patronize places that allow smoking. It kicks up my asthma and besides that, good food and fine beer don't taste nearly as good in that environment. I believe I will stick with Yats.

I believe the other Badaboomz is owned by someone other than Mike DeWeese. They got my business once and then after I learned they allowed smoking on the bar side I did not return. Their food was mediocre and their tap list MUCH shorter than downtown. The J Gumbo website only lists the downtown location in Indianapolis.

  7. I'm under the impression that Mike owns both BadaBoomz / J. Gumbo's locations but a family member manages the one on the west side. Last I heard the tap list is not comparable to the one downtown and I don't think the drink specials are the same at each.

  8. We'll keep the smoking policy in mind for write-ups in the future. As for a current tally of places we've attended in Indy, I think on J. Gumboz/Badaboomz, Locals Only, and Spencer's Stadium Tavern allow it.

In sure if I'm missing one someone else will chime in.

  9. The other good reason to mention the smoking aspect is for those of us with kids that want to go to a place that has some good beer and food. I tried walking into the Badaboomz on the westside a couple months ago with my wife and son and was turned away because he wasn't at least 18 and they allowed smoking.

Anyway, thanks for the info on the westside Badaboomz.. It's a shame it doesn't have the selection. There is no really good place to drink on the west side of Indy. :-( If there is, PLEASE let me know about it!
