I was just sitting here, thinking about how much I enjoyed the Upland Pilsner I recently drank at Adobo. I also got to thinking about how much I enjoy Upland Wheat. For some reason, both of these beers are treating me wonderfully as of late. Neither of them are beers that beer geeks would normally go crazy for (both the pilsner and wheat currently have criminal ratings of 60 on ratebeer), but they're both extremely sessionable and amazingly addictive. In the case of the Wheat, we're talking about a 2002 GABF Gold Medal winner! A 60 score? What the f**k.Now I'm asking you - What underrated beers do you love?
And if it was us at HBG that underated your beer, feel free to tell us what you think of us.

great fallback beer at about any restaraunt or pub, and every time i buy it, i'm impressed. just a rock solid beer.

ReplyDeleteAnd BBC's Bourbon Barrel Stout is still one of my all time favorites, despite the fact that YOU folks just downgraded your rating of it last month. Underraters!

More unknown then under-rated, Boulevard Bob's 47 is a heck of a beer.
ReplyDeleteChristopher - we were just as surprised as you at our rating of BBC's BBS. That's a beer we are usually quite fond of.
ReplyDeleteI would say any Kolsch-style beer (Gaffel, Reissdorf or even Goose Island Summertime) or a Munich Helles Lager. Both are great for summer but are very poorly represented here.

ReplyDeleteI recently revisited Newcastle after a very very long time away (probably before I really got into beer) and was very pleasantly surprised. That's one that I'd never thought would have wowed me, but it kinda did.

ReplyDeleteI agree that Preservation Pilsner and Sam Adams are underrated. I'd add Barley Island Barfly IPA, which I think is a really well-balanced American IPA. I'll also add lagers in general. Too many beer geeks turn up their noses at lagers, and I am puzzled as to why that is.

ReplyDeleteI really liked Warbird's Golden. I tried it for the first time at last years BIG Microbrew fest and I went right out and got a 6 of it.

ReplyDeleteMad Anthony IPA. I know several locals dig this beer quite a bit, but this is probably my desert island IPA and was the first beer to really open my eyes to the taste sensation when citrus collides with hops. It gets a mediocre B on Beer Advocate and a 79 on Rate Beer, but I think it deserves a lot more.
