Dogfish Head's Sam Calagione Toasts HBG3

One of the things you missed if you weren't able to attend our party was a special video specifically prepared by the folks at Dogfish Head for the event. The folks at World Class Beverages worked with DFH to set the whole thing up. To say it was a pleasant surprise would be an understatement.

Here's a link to the video for our email/rss readers

Our thanks go out to Sam and Mariah at Dogfish Head, and to the folks at WCB for their efforts.

HBG3: Crowd shots

Consider this the B roll.

HBG3: From the Lens of (French) Mike

Thank You

We'd like to thank everyone involved with our HBG3 third anniversary roundtable event at Sun King. From all the folks at Sun King, to Chef JJ and his staff, to the pourers, everyone that donated beer, our friends at World Class Beverages and Cavalier Distributing, Sam and Mariah Calagione at Dogfish Head, and last but certainly not least our guests - we thank you.

We were quite happy with how things went off, but our events are an ongoing process - so if you have thoughts, suggestions, or even complaints, we'd love to hear them for the next time around. Leave us a comment! Hopefully these events will only get better with time.

Thanks again!

HBG3 Directions and Final Details

Now that the event is officially sold out*, those of you with tickets are probably curious about the logistics of this little shindig. Those of you without tickets have to suffer through this little exercise and have hopefully reserved the next 12 months on your calendars for future HBG events.

WHO
Everyone who has purchased a ticket. The ticket gets you a tasting glass and beer will only be poured in tasting glasses. Since the regular tickets have sold out, we're considering the DD tickets sold out as well. We know our readers have enough respect to not abuse the DD system like some people do at beer festivals, but just to be safe we've turned off ticket sales. If you don't have a ticket and you're not on the Will Call list, we can't let you in. We were totally serious about that "no day of sales" thing.

WHERE
Sun King Brewing Company
135 N. College Ave.
Indianapolis, IN 46202
Map

Keep in mind College is a one-way, northbound street downtown.

WHEN
Saturday, August 22
6PM - ???

We'll continue the party until one of three things happen:

  • We legally have to stop pouring beer

  • We run out of beer

  • The good folks at Sun King kick us out

  • Secret underground* Sun King Brewery

    WHAT
5-courses of food provided by Chef JJ and the Backyard Grill Orchestra. We're going to keep this fairly informal, so there will be food stations strategically positioned. This is a party, not a formal dinner. Pairing is encouraged.

When you enter you'll receive a a commemorative 12oz tasting glass - which we'll pour a bit short since you'll probably be walking around. You'll also receive a punch card or tickets or tokens or shillings good for FOUR Sun King beers of your choice and FOUR guest beers of your choice. On top of that, you're welcome to sample all of the guest beers without your punch card. We encourage everyone to sample everything and use your punch card on the beers you like the most. Obviously when a beer runs out, it's done forever, so get your favorites in first. In summary, you're getting 8 half-pints plus however many samples you want.

If for some reason that's not enough beer, the brewery ninjas at Sun King will be selling additional pours of their beer and growlers of Sun King beer to take home.

    Beer comes out of these

    WHY
Because it's our birthday! Let's party!

*Two tickets remaining as of 3PM Sold out as of 3:30PM
    *Sun King is not underground.

HBG 3 Details: Guest Beer #13 and the Hosts' Lineup

The lack of comments lately either means you're overwhelmed or that you're not attending HBG3. In any case, we soldier on.

First off, a bit of unfortunate news. Due to some unforeseen complications, Brugge will not be providing beer for our event. In any case, we thank them them for the interest and continued friendship, and we'll catch up with Ted and company again soon. Maybe for a breakfast?

The good news is that we've got something else in Brugge's place.

This morning we recieved the following email from Mat Gerdenich at Cavalier:
Watching the line up develop on the website and looking at current inventory and thought maybe a half brl of Cerise from Founders might be a good fit for this Saturday.
    Yes, please.

Despite our love for all that Founders does, we haven't yet reviewed Cerise. Founders says:
You’ll have a soft spot for this one. Using only fresh Michigan tart cherries, this beauty tantalizes with intense flavors combined with a no hesitation malt bill. Adding fresh cherries at five separate stages of fermentation achieves the ultimate balance between tartness and sweetness.

    6.5% ABV
    15 IBU
We've all sampled this beer before and we know it'll be an excellent addition to the lineup.

    * * * * *

Of course guest beer 13 isn't the end of the lineup... we've still got a list of beers from Sun King.

    (Lineup subject to possible changes)

    Sunlight Cream Ale

Sunlight Cream Ale is our most approachable beer and is a great introduction to the world of Craft Beer. Cream ale is one of the earliest styles of American beer, but was virtually wiped out by American lager brewers.

Our Cream Ale is an all malt beer. Only the finest quality barley, wheat, and oats are used to give this beer its smooth malt profile, which is delicately balanced with American hops and a cool fermentation to give this beer a crisp, clean finish.

    ABV: 5.3%
    IBU’s: 20

    Bitter Druid ESB

The Bitter Druid ESB is a new twist on an old favorite. Our Americanized ESB blends American two-row pale malt with choice British specialty malts to create a rich malt start that is followed by a crisp, American hop finish. This beer is a wonderful gateway to the world of hops due to its delicate balance and rich array of flavors.

    ABV: 5.8%
    IBU’s: 43

    Wee Mac Brown

Wee Mac is a Scottish style Brown Ale. Fermented at cooler than normal temperatures to mimic the climate of Scotland, Wee Nessie is an easy drinking brown ale that is both smooth and malty with caramel and chocolate tones. Hops are used sparingly in this beer and serve only to help balance the sweetness of the malt.

    ABV: 5.4%
    IBU’s: 23

    Osiris Pale Ale

Osiris Pale Ale is an assertive American Pale and is not meant for the timid. Crafted by our brewers for our brewers, Osiris blends three choice varieties of American hops to create a spicy, citrus hop punch that is sure to satisfy any hop head. Every batch of Osiris is dry-hopped towards the end of fermentation for maximum hop flavor, aroma, and character.

    ABV: 5.6%
    IBU’s: 50

    Das Boot Alt

Das Boot Alt is a traditional German Brown Ale that is fermented cool, which creates a clean malt profile and smooth, easy-drinking beer.

This beer is part of the Replicale project by The Brewers of Indiana Guild that is headed up by Sun King’s own Dave Colt. Every year Dave creates a recipe that is then brewed by any Indiana brewery that wants to participate. Replicale showcases the vast nuances that are created by individual breweries due to their particular style.

    ABV: 5.8%
    IBU’s: 32

    Firefly Wheat

A unique and complex take on Belgian Wheat Beer. Firefly utilizes a special yeast that imparts fruity and spicy notes to the beer, which compliments the character of the wheat malt. Firefly is unfiltered and crafted from the finest quality American malts, which creates a delightful drinking experience.

    ABV: 5.2%
    IBU’s: 13

    * * * * *

Rumor has it that we might also be seeing Sun King's Saison de Taffy, Belgian Dark, Imperial IPA, and a firkin of something.

So what's left? Tomorrow we'll have photos of the location, directions, tips, and anything else we can thing of to roundup the event info.

I think we have less than 10 tickets left right now. There will be no day-of tickets for the event. You knew that already.

    18 August 2009

HBG 3 Details: Guest Beer #5 Through #12

    Well.

    Mad Anthony British IPA

Our experience with Mad Anthony goes way back, but surprisingly enough it wasn't until KOTBR #77 (The Socratic Beer Method) that we actually roundtabled one of their beers (their regular IPA).

The beer we'll have at HBG3 isn't that beer. What we've got instead is a British-style IPA, a beer that you'll find very little information about online. Limited release? New style? Special occasion only? Perhaps all three. We're excited.

    Upland Wheat

For KOTBR#71 (Indiana Beer Night), the Knights descended upon Zing and drank their way through three of Indiana's finest, one of which was Upland Wheat. When the summer season hit this year, I became addicted to the beer, which is amazingly easy-drinking. Like a soda, almost. Its inclusion on our list comes at the insistence of both Chris and I.

Cari from Upland passes along the following info:
A classic rendition of a Belgian Wit, Upland Wheat is light on the tongue and easygoing yet refreshingly tart with a distinct citrus finish. We use organic orange peel, chamomile, and coriander to give Wheat its distinctive floral notes. We are proud to note that not only is Upland Wheat our signature beer, it is also the number one selling Indiana brewed beer in our state. It pairs well with just about any food but especially well with fish and shellfish, salads, and spicy foods.

    ABV 4.0 %
    IBU 12.6
    OG 11

    Upland Bourbon Barrel Chocolate Stout

Next up is another beer from Upland - one that you can't get in a bottle. In fact (to the best of my knowledge), you currently can only find on tap at the brewery in Bloomington. This is an inclusion based on reader and party attendee votes. Cari says:
A dark and robust beer brewed in the traditional stout method. Chocolate, pale, and roasted malts are used, which create enticing coffee overtones. Organic dark chocolate is added in the conditioning phase, which creates a complex finish. Then we place the beer in 23-year-old Pappy Van Winkle bourbon barrel casks for 3-4 months. This gives you a nice up front chocolate and coffee flavor and moderate bourbon flavor on the back.

    ABV 6.8%

    Oaken Barrel Snake Pit Porter

KOTBR #13 holds a special place in my heart--It was the first time Gina and I joined the (very small at the time) KOTBR for a drink. The beer reviewed that night? Oaken Barrel's Snake Pit Porter. "Pork barbecue in a bottle" is what Jason called it. A perfect brew for a summer picnic.
Not for the uninitiated, this robust ale is dark and flavorful with a mouthfeel edging towards the chewy side. Imported chocolate, crystal, and black malts are combined in the classic English tradition to make Snake Pit a complex tease for a mouthwatering palate.

    ABV 5.80% / ABW 4.64%
    IBU: 41

Three Floyds Smokin' Trebuchet Smoked Helles Bock

It wouldn't be an Indiana beer party without a beer from our friends up north, and they've come through in a big way for us with their Smokin' Trebuchet Smoked Helles. Use the internet to search far and wide, and I think you'll find that this is a beer that's making its first-time journey outside of the Three Floyds brewpub. BJCP style guidelines for smoked beer include the words "smoky, bacon-like, woody, or rarely almost greasy", but keep in mind that this is a Three Floyds beer, which means that guidelines are usually there to be stretched, disfigured, or broken.

Lafayette Brewing Company Tippecanoe Common Ale

KOTBR #78 (Lafayette, we are here!) found Jason, Gina, and myself sitting at the bar at Lafayette Brewing Company, where the tastiness of the beer was matched by the friendliness of our company. Our only regret that day was that our samples of Tippecanoe Common Ale were poured from a bottle instead of a tap.

Nevertheless, we gave Tippecanoe Common a four mug score, and vowed to try it again sometime when it was on tap. Little did we know that it would be at our own party. I said:
Hints of grapefruit-like hops are nicely balanced with a tasty caramel back, giving you a hoppy yet complex and extremely sessionable red ale.

Rock Bottom Downtown Hoosier Ma Stout

We've been to Rock Bottom downtown in an official HBG KOTBR sense more than once, reviewing their Brickway Brown, seasonal IPA, and pumpkin ale.

But we haven't reviewed their Stout, which was the beer of choice in a private HBG/KOTBR party lineup vote. Luckily, you can help us out with that review.

    Rock Bottom brewer Jerry says:
    Hoosier Ma Stout
    Milk Stout
    sweet and creamy. Udderly delicious!
Hops: Golding Malts: English Pale, Chocolate, Roasted Barley, Rolled Oats
    ABV. 4.6% O.G. 13.8°

    Dogfish Head Palo Santo Marron

This one really came out of nowhere. We reviewed Palo Santo Marron at KOTBR #62 (A Very Special Hoosier Beer Geek Thanksgiving Roundtable) and everyone had vastly different opinions of this full-flavored beer. We've had it on tap since, and I think it's safe to say that it's definitely a different sort of animal every time--one we'll be happy to unleash in these bottles on the crowd.

    Dogfish says:
An unfiltered, unfettered, unprecedented brown ale aged in handmade wooden brewing vessels. The caramel and vanilla complexity unique to this beer comes from the exotic Paraguayan Palo Santo wood from which these tanks were crafted. Palo Santo means "holy tree" and it's wood has been used in South American wine-making communities.

This beer is a 12% abv, highly roasty, and malty brown ale aged on the Palo Santo wood. It was a huge hit at our Rehoboth Beach brewpub when first released in November of 2006, Palo went into full production at the end of 2007.

At 10,000 gallons, our Palo Tank is the largest wooden brewing vessel built in America since before Prohibition (and we have two same-sized Oak tanks right next to it).

    Food Pairing Recommendations:
Steak, chorizzo sausage, cajun cuisine, farmhouse cheddar

    Tasting Notes:
caramel, vanilla, Paraguayan palo santo wood

    Wine Comparable:
    Oak Aged Cabernet

    ABV: 12.0%
    IBU: 50
We say yay. What do you say?

So... tickets? Here's the link. There are less than 20 left. There are no day-of tickets. We'll see you Saturday at 6PM at Sun King. And (just in case) you might want to bring a lawn chair. Still waiting to see what Brugge is bringing for lucky beer 13...

    17 August 2009

HBG3 Details: Guest Beer #4 - Broad Ripple Brewing Company's Relegator Black IPA

You've been giving your F5 a healthy workout just waiting to see what's next on the menu for our party.

    This is:

Many of the HBG KOTBR spent their time at this year's Indiana Microbrewers Festival under the firkin tent, where we poured quite a few tasty brews. A highlight for many of us was Broad Ripple Brewpub's Relegator Black IPA.

Relegator was specially brewed to commiserate with Middlesbrough FC, who were relegated (sent down from the English Premiership to the Championship league) in the 2008-2009 EPL season. It's an extra black bitter IPA. Black to represent the dark fear of Middlesbrough not being promoted back to the EPL in the 2009-2010 season, and extra bitter to represent how Middlesbrough supporters feel about the relegation. ABV 7.2%

We'll have it for you at the Hoosier Beer Geek Third Anniversary Roundtable at Sun King Brewing on August 22nd at 6PM.

There will be no day-of tickets. Click here to purchase tickets now.

HBG3 Details: Guest Beer #3 - Barley Island German Alt Replicale

Blah blah blah Sun King, blah blah food, blah blah HBG3. Blah blah-blah blah tickets. Blah blah capped at 150. Blah there will be no day-of tickets for the event blah blah.

And the next beer on the list:

Each year the Brewers of Indiana share a common recipe and make a special beer for the Microbrewers Festival. The beer style for this year was German Alt.

    Notes from IndianaBeer.com:
The smoothness of an ale but less fruity. As bitter as a British Ale with a crisp tang from Noble hops. The Indiana Replicale has Kölsch, Vienna, Munich Dark, and Carafa I malts with Perle hops.

Alt means Old in German. Only the area around Düsseldorf and Cologne continued to use top-fermenting yeast when lagers became the rage in Germnay in the late 1800s.

    O.G. 12.5 plato IBU's 32

    Malt: Global Kolsch 85%
    Global Vienna 9%
    Global Munich dark 5%
    Weyermann Carafa1 1%

    Hops: Perle 6.3% alpha

    Yeast: Whatever your heart desires.
We'll have it for you at the Hoosier Beer Geek Third Anniversary Roundtable at Sun King Brewing on August 22nd.

    15 August 2009

HBG3 Details: Guest Beer #2 - Mad River John Barleycorn Barleywine

You already know that we'll have samples of six Sun King beers and an extensive food menu from Chef JJ at HBG3 (our third anniversary roundtable/party). You've certainly either already bought tickets or you've put the plan in place to buy a ticket for our anniversary party. You know that every minute we're growing closer to our goal for ticket sales (which will be capped at 150), and that if you snooze you lose. And of course you know that there will be no day-of tickets for the event. I'm even willing to believe that you've had the words "ticket sales will be closing Friday, August 21st at 6PM" tattooed on your forehead.

Now all you need to do is stay tuned while we roll out the beer list.

    Mad River John Barleycorn Barleywine

Early on in Hoosier Beer Geek history, we reached out to the folks at Cavalier (and Mat Gerdenich specifically) to get an idea of how they handle their beer business. Mat's been a friend ever since, and he's been quite generous in providing us with a half barrel of Mad River's John Barleycorn Barleywine.

    Mad River says:
Our Seasonal Offering. We honor the Harvest & Holidays each year by brewing a traditional Barleywine style ale, using a variety of ingredients.

Brewed in small 10-barrel batches with Certified Organic barley malt, this crimson hued ale has a sweet caramel nose with a zesty spicy, citrus taste. It has a slight hop finish and leaves a warm, tingling sensation on the tongue.

    Starting Gravity 1.098
    Finish Gravity 1.020
    ABV 9.5
    IBU 96
Sounds like a proper fall kick-off to me. We'll have it for you at the Hoosier Beer Geek Third Anniversary Roundtable at Sun King Brewing on August 22nd.

    14 August 2009

HBG3 Details: Guest Beer #1 - Schlafly India Brown Ale

I'm well aware that this kind of thing can get old quick if you're not interested or haven't bought tickets for our anniversary party. We're growing closer to our goal for ticket sales (which will be capped at 150), and we once again want to remind you that there will be no day-of tickets for the event. In fact, ticket sales will be closing Friday, August 21st at 6PM. If you haven't bought by then, you're out of luck. If you haven't bought before tickets run out, you're also out of luck. We're trying to do our best to warn you.

    Here we go.

    Schlafly India Brown Ale

We've had a very good relationship with the folks at Schlafly for a few years now, so we were delighted to hear that they'd be helping us out with our anniversary event. Schlafly’s Tap Room brewer Brennan crafted India Brown to celebrate his marriage to Natasha in 2008. It’s brown in color, but hopped more like an IPA, especially in aroma, as it was dry hopped with Cascade and Willamette. 40 IBUs, 5.2% abv.

Our friend and Schlafly rep Scott says: "I know you all got to try it last year, but we tweaked the recipe this year. It's now dry-hopped with Simcoe Hops. I had it last week and it is amazing!!!"

This beer is listed as a Schlafly Tap Room Only single batch series beer on their website, and was be released there on August 7th. We'll have it for you at the Hoosier Beer Geek Third Anniversary Roundtable at Sun King Brewing on August 22nd.

    10 August 2009

    Help Us Help You

As you know, our third anniversary roundtable is coming up. We want to make the following completely clear -

THERE WILL BE NO DAY-OF EVENT TICKETS SOLD FOR/AT OUR ANNIVERSARY PARTY.

So if you're coming, buy now. Ok, that's out of the way...

We've got a few things to iron out - like which of the two Upland beers listed below we'd like to drink at the party.

Which Upland beer would you like to see at the Hoosier Beer Geek Third Anniversary Party?

Anniversary party ticketholders (or future ticketholders) only, please.

The Hoosier Beer Geek Third Anniversary Roundtable - Full Details

Two years ago we sent out a message to our email subscribers that started out as follows: "You are receiving this email invite because we consider you a friend." Here we are two years later, and we're proud to say that most of our friends are still with us. We've also picked up quite a few new friends along the way. We can't thank you enough.

As has been the case in the last two years, we are picking a day in August to celebrate the anniversary of Hoosier Beer Geek. In our first year we celebrated with a tapping of 90 minute IPA at Deano's Vino. For our second anniversary we celebrated with our friends at Brugge Brasserie. This year we'd like to introduce you all to Indiana's newest brewery, Sun King Brewing Company.

THE HOOSIER BEER GEEK THIRD ANNIVERSARY ROUNDTABLE
    6PM - SATURDAY, AUGUST 22ND, 2009 - SUN KING BREWING
    135 N. College Ave. Indianapolis, IN 46202

The event includes a full sampling of beer from SUN KING, but we thought that maybe that wasn't enough. So we asked some of our other brewery and distributor friends to contribute. Breweries such as BRUGGE, UPLAND, OAKEN BARREL, BARLEY ISLAND, SCHLAFLY, and ROCK BOTTOM DOWNTOWN have all committed to providing beer for the event. In addition our friends at CAVALIER DISTRIBUTING and WORLD CLASS BEVERAGES will be providing us with kegs of something special.

Of course all that beer can tends to make a person hungry. So we worked with our friend Chef JJ to come up with food stations, and a menu with enough variety to keep anyone happy. We came up with the following:

CHEESE AND CRACKER TRAY WITH GRILLED SAUSAGES
    MINI BLACK BEAN BURGERS
    GORGONZOLA MINI BELLA SANDWICHES
STEAK KABOBS WITH SWEET POTATO FRIES
    CHICKEN WINGS

So... we think we've put together something pretty special. Your ticket also includes a commemorative tasting glass with the Sun King and Hoosier Beer Geek logos, and there will be some prizes and surprises in store as well.

Tickets for this event are limited, and when they're gone, they're really gone. They're available from now until August 9th for $30 - that price will increase after August 9th, so you'll probably want to act fast. The tickets can be purchased through brown paper tickets, and the link to tickets is here: http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/71571

Lastly, in case you're wondering, $20 Designated Driver tickets are available now through the brown paper tickets at the same link as listed above. Designated drivers will not receive a commemorative glass, but will receive the same food. DD beverage choices will be limited to water and soda.

On behalf of Jason, Jim, Gina, Matt, Rod, Jess, Matt, and Chris, I'd like to say thanks for your patronage. And we'll see on August 22nd!

What's cooking for HBG 3, literally

Maybe we mentioned something about our super awesome third anniversary extravaganza. I think there's a big ad for it somewhere on the website. Tickets are $30 in advance and are currently limited to 100, so hurry up and get on that before it's too late! If a little breakfast event earlier this year is any evidence of the kind of parties we throw, there's no reason not to come! Not even being pregnant or getting married or living out of state! NONE!

Oh, maybe you want to know what we have up our sleeves? As we said before, up and coming grill-master and chef extraordinaire Chef JJ will be whipping up something special for our birthday. 5 courses of something special. They currently look something like this:

    • Cheese and cracker tray with grilled sausages

    • Mini black bean burgers

    • Gorgonzola mini bella sandwiches

    • Steak kabobs with sweet potato fries

    • Chicken wings

I think there's something in there for everyone. Obviously we're going to have beer too. A lot of beer. But that's another post.

    We Throw Good Parties

You are formally invited to the Hoosier Beer Geek Third Anniversary Roundtable, to be held at Sun King Brewing on Saturday, August 22nd, at 6PM. As with any HBG event, the idea is to overwhelm, and we're currently doing our best to do just that.

We've got 100+ tickets for this event, and our goal is to sell them fast. So we're making a deal - the first 100 tickets will be $30. After those tickets are gone, we'll slowly increase the price until the day of the event.

Part of the idea behind the event is to help create a little buzz for Indy's newest brewery, Sun King. But we're also working with the friends we've made over the past three years to have beer from a wide variety of brewers and distributors. We've currently got commitments from our friends at Upland, Schlafly, Cavalier Distributing, and World Class Distributing.

In addition, we'll have various food options from Chef JJ - we're thinking small tastes that will match the beer selections. Of course the food is included with your ticket.

All of this is in the works, and it's still early. We plan to make this event as good or better than any other we've thrown, and we think it's safe to say that people rarely leave a HBG event disappointed. So buy now (or soon!), and share in the excitement with us as details roll in.

    To buy tickets, click here.

    And thanks for your patronage.
