The very first Hoosier Beer Geek Pint Night is in the books. We thank all those who came out to enjoy Founders All Day IPA with us. We also thank Tracy Robertson and Mass Ave Pub for hosting us. If you've never been to Mass Ave Pub and you're into craft beer, we urge you to go. Tracy keeps all taps flowing with craft beer, and you're always bound to find off-the-beaten-path beers in stock.
For those of you wondering, yes, there will be another Pint Night. Indeed, this is going to be a monthly thing. So check back in with us here at Hoosier Beer Geek because we'll soon announce the next location and beer for April's Pint Night. In the meantime, enjoy this peek at what you missed if you weren't able to make it out for Pint Night I.
We hope to see you in April!

IBA: Interrogatories
By Tyler D. Helmond, Voyles Zahn & PaulMarch 27, 2013

Executive Director, Brewers of Indiana Guild
Lee A. Smith
Executive Director, Brewers of Indiana Guild
Lee Smith
She is a graduate of Indiana University and the Chicago-Kent College of Law. She has served as a Deputy Public Defender at the Indiana State Public Defender’s Office, the Principal Clerk of the Indiana House of Representatives, and a Donor Relations Officer at Indiana Landmarks. She is Lee Smith, and she has been served with interrogatories.
Q What is the Brewers of Indiana Guild?
A The Guild is the trade association for all of Indiana’s professional craft breweries, 61 at the moment but the ranks are growing an average of one new brewery per month.
Q In your former life, your clients were criminal defendants. Now your only client is Indiana craft beer. For which is it more fun to advocate?
A Well, of course the brewers are more fun, especially since I don’t have to be frisked prior to visits with this client! Our meetings often include sitting down with a pint of beer (a very civilized way to conduct business, by the way!). But you’re right to recognize that both of these career turns include advocacy. I love the job I have now, but I’m also proud of the work I did as a Deputy Public Defender.
Q What is the most interesting or unique Indiana craft beer you’ve tried?
A Our brewers are very creative, so “most unique” changes all the time. One beer that comes to mind is Rob Caputo’s Cucumber Kolsch. Rob is the head brewer at Flat 12 Bierwerks. It didn’t sound like something I’d like, but it was refreshingly light with just a hint of cucumber, and quite delicious! I took the Kolsch to the Great American Beer Festival last October and people were absolutely crazy for it.
Q The Guild sponsors several very popular beer festivals each year. What goes into making those events so successful? Are there any plans to add annual events?
A We produce three annual festivals with a total attendance of around 10,000. Winterfest and the Indiana Microbrewers Festival are in Indy, and our newest fest is in Bloomington. The next festival is the Third Annual Bloomington Craft Beer Festival in April (a great fest in an amazing venue: the historic Woolery Mill). There are two reasons our festivals have gained such a loyal following: the brewers and the volunteers. The brewers are kind of rock stars among the faithful, and festivals are the primary opportunity for brewers and beer enthusiasts to interact (and the brewers enjoy it just as much as the guests). Our festivals are largely managed by a group of volunteers called Hoosier Beer Geek. These people are amazing in their dedication and professionalism. The Guild is still basically a grass-roots organization and we couldn’t do the festivals without HBG.
Q I can’t ask you to pick a favorite from among Guild members, so what is your favorite commercial beer?
A Well, if I picked one of the big “fizzy” beers I’d get laughed out of the Guild. Truth be told, I’m not sure I’ll ever again enjoy a Bud Light. If I can’t get craft, I’ll order the closest thing which usually ends up being a Heineken.
Q You have two children who are at or nearing drinking age. What has been your approach to teach them about alcohol and how it should be used responsibly?
A We’ve tried to demystify alcohol in our household. My husband and I are not big drinkers, but we certainly have alcohol in the home. When our oldest went to college (he is now 23) my husband and I were impressed that the kids seem to be more responsible about driving than we were at that age. Our younger son is 17 and we’ve talked about being responsible, not only for his own behavior but also in watching out for his friends. Incidentally, craft beer is not really what underage drinkers are after. For one thing, it is expensive. And the taste is better suited to a more mature palate. You just don’t hear about kids chugging $7 pints of beer.
Q What are some skills you developed as a litigator and as a legislative lawyer that are useful in leading an organization like the Guild? What advice would you give a lawyer transitioning from practice to leading an organization?
A In some ways my job with the Guild is similar to my days as Principal Clerk of the Indiana House of Representatives. Technically, I report directly to the Guild President, as I reported directly to the Speaker at the State House. But I have a broad constituency of owners and brewers with specific needs and objectives, just like my “100 bosses” at the House of Representatives. I learn a lot just by listening to my brewers and visiting them in their environment. As for advice, I’d tell lawyers considering a change to follow their hearts. A law degree should not constrain one’s choices. Instead, it should open doors. I know lawyers who have jumped tracks into education, NFP management, social services, lobbying and even brewing (of course!—who but lawyers would call their brewpub Black Acre?). I’ve never heard anyone express regret over time spent in the practice of law or a law school education.
Q How much more likely to have a beard are brewers compared with the general population?
A Someone should do a study on that! Wonder if there’s grant money… Off the top of my head, I’d guess the incidence of beards on brewers is second only to orthodox rabbis.
Q Can or bottle?
A Hot topic right now! Bottles are still way more common than cans for crafts, but can proponents (like Sun King, Great Crescent and newcomer Tin Man) are passionate about cans and say it keeps beer fresher.•

KOTBR #150 | Celebrating a Century and a Half of Roundtables at Black Acre Brewing, Irvington
Jason says...
I am an unapologetic home-team supporter. Through all the faults, and there are many, I love Indiana and Indianapolis and Irvington. So when Black Acre opened, it came as a surprise to no one that I fell in love with my local brewery. Which is why I was excited to have some of the other Knights visit and review two of their beers. Valve (a California Common) and Anniversary Ale (a Rye Whiskey Barrel Aged Scotch Ale) are probably on opposite ends of the beer spectrum, but I do not believe anybody would be disappointed. Obviously, I will let me fellow Knights of the Beer Roundtable speak for themselves. However, as the Beer Geek Bard of Irvington, I will leave you with this sonnet:
Great taste! The beer: where does Black Acre make?
They are out east, in the ‘hood of Irvington.
Arise, fair geeks, and drink of them soon,
Whose taps are flowing and provide relief.
That those beers art far more fair is key:
Valve that they made is not monotonous;
But common of California or steam
And none but fools do swear it off.
Call me, maybe? Cuz it I could drink of.
O, that malt is sweet for sure!
It’s hopped yet it is balanced, but not flat.
Drink many courses? Then Valve is it.
To be bold, there is another I speak:
A barrel aged brew falls down from heaven,
Anniversary Ale; cannot beat this prize
Of scotch ale and rye whiskey burn.
The ale tis sweet and will go to your head.
Near ten per hundred parts booze would raise most bars.
Flavors of caramel, in barrels they are leaven.
Wood holding rye provides a slight bite
Though the booze was not noticed on this night.
See, how I hold another in my hand!
O, I ordered more than I had planned,
Lucky I live down the street!
Kristin says...
I have journeyed to Black Acre two times - both with the unofficial President of Irvington, Jason. Could there be a better guide to this beautiful, you-feel-at-home-right-away, I-want-to-remodel-my-home-to-look-like-this space? I think not.
I think the aesthetics of Black Arcre are incredible. The multi-wood paneled walls, the coconut pineapple hand lotion in the bathroom (YES!), and that beautiful bar...finally getting the the point. They make damn good beer.
We decided to roundtable two, although we drank many more. But I think it's also worth mentioning, that Black Acre has a fantastic guest draft list. And, if you're a wine fan, Thursdays are half-price bottle nights. BONUS!
Anniversary Ale: described as "a sweet and malty scotch ale aged for months in a rye whiskey barrel." This beer was everything it promised to be and more. The nose was terribly smooth with a nice hint of scotch. It came it at 9.9%, but you would never know it. Danger, danger! It had a great sweet finish, and I wanted more. I ordered one, after drinking half of my neighbors.
Valve California Common: described as an "amber colored lager with an upfront malt sweetness balanced by the earthy bitterness of Northern Brewer hops." Seriously, who doesn't like a solid Common? And this thing was right on. It was clean, mild, and the bitterness was balanced well. At 6.1%, some would definitely question it as a sessionable beer, but I sure found it to be sessionable. Thank you sir, I'll have another.
Meg says...
A rhyme:
The first beer I tried was the Common,
but the common was anything but.
It was hoppy and malty, balanced and smooth,
this brewer is NOT in a rut.
It was golden and pure in its color
I sipped and I sipped some more.
But at 5.2, and 41 IBUs
I did not end up on the floor.
Anniversary Ale was up next,
Barrel aged and brewed to perfection.
It danced on my tongue, a joy...a delight!
I'll remember this beer with affection.
Two things to note, when you visit:
The soap in the bathroom's DEVINE.
...and if you sit next to Jason, he'll probably spill
you'll smell like you soaked in beer brine.
Jason says (again)...
Oops. Sorry about that Meg. But admit it, your hubby thought you smelled awesome when you returned home...

Want to know what people are saying about our beers? Check out our profile on Untappd.
From Cari at Upland Brewing Co.:
Some of you may have heard the rumors, and I'm happy to say it is true: Upland Brewing Company, in celebration of our 15th anniversary, has revived Champagne Velvet, a pre-prohibition style lager that was most popular from the turn of the century into the 1950s. At one point it was the 7th largest brewed beer in the United States. It was revived a couple of times since, and we've decided to bring it back. On April 6, we will launch "CV", as we call it, in the Terre Haute market, and throughout April it will ship to Indianapolis and Bloomington. Check back at http://champagnevelvet.com/ as this great project blossoms.
We have a couple of seasonals releasing soon, as well.
First off, Ard Ri, or the "High King," is in stock and ready to be picked up for St. Patrick's Day. Ard Ri Imperial Red Ale is our answer to an Irish St. Patty's beer: a nice hazy ruby color and a solid malt backbone gets a punch of hops, raising the IBUs to 77 and ABV is 9.3%. Ard Ri is available in 22 oz bottles and draft.
Secondly, in May, we will have a brand new seasonal: Campside Session IPA.
Events Upcoming:
- Red Eye Relay Registration is up! http://uplandbeeradventures.com/event/red-eye-relay/

We are opening a Tap House in Carmel at 116th & Guilford. It will be a hybrid of our Brewpub in Bloomington and Tasting Room in Indy. The means we're hiring, too. Hoosier Beer Geek's Inaugural Pint Night
We're rolling out a new Hoosier Beer Geek event for the first time this month. We're calling it HBG Pint Night, and we hope to make it a regular event.
So join us at the Mass Ave Pub at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 28. At this first Pint Night, our featured beer will be Founders All Day IPA, which will run you $3.50 per pint for the night.
What's the purpose of Pint Night? To provide the community with pints at a great price and, if you're interested in learning, to educate you about the particular beer on tap. In fact, we'll provide an information sheet on the beer and welcome your suggestions for which beers we should feature at future HBG Pint Nights. So come on out and enjoy some great beer and conversation with us.

Random Beer Roundup - The Here's to Me, & Here's to You Edition
Events are subject to change
From the Brewers

The First Meeting of BY(O)B
On a recent winter evening at the Sinking Ship, the Knights of the Beer Roundtable did two things that most would not expect.
First, Gina, Jim, and I consumed large amounts of Schlitz and Pabst Blue Ribbon.
Second, I won a Moon Walk competition and took home a 12 pack of Tab.
Why were we drinking Schlitz and PBR at the Sinking Ship? It is the only bar known to carry both beers in Indianapolis. This information was brought to our attention by our new friend and drinking buddy Peter.
Peter is famous (or infamous, your choice) for creating the Schlabst. It is Milwaukee’s black and tan and consists of Schlitz poured on the bottom and PBR poured on the top (do it the other way and you end up with a Pitz). And Peter wanted to share this with us. So we ordered. And we drank. And we drank some more. We even added Valentine-versions of Peeps for the hell of it. And it was fun. And it tasted good. Good enough to order a second round.
Officiating marriages between beers is not Peter’s only interest. He is, also, a new resident to Indianapolis, brought here by his new job. His full name is Peter Wilt and he is the president of the new professional soccer team in Indianapolis. The new North American Soccer League franchise will play its first season in 2014 at Carroll Stadium on the IUPUI campus.
Team owner Ersal Ozdemir was smart to bring the talented Peter Wilt to Indy. Peter is probably best known for being the former president and general manager of the Major League Soccer team Chicago Fire. He has a knack for building up new teams and rallying fan bases. It may have something to do with making himself available to the public. What other professional sports team president in Indianapolis would have beers with the Knights of the Beer Roundtable?
Well… I have not asked them. Maybe they would. Does anybody have Ryan Grigson’s email address?
Even if I did have Grigson’s email address, I would be a bit sheepish to ask. Peter, on the other hand, has made himself available to the fans through Twitter and can be found frequently Indy’s quality watering holes in Fountain Square, Mass Ave, and Broad Ripple. He is obviously doing something right. The soccer team has 2,000 season ticket holders.
2,000.
Without a coach, a single player, a single game played…
Or a name.
The name of the soccer team has been the subject of great debate amongst soccer fans, including supporters group Brickyard Battalion (or BYB). Even Peter is not sure what name will ultimately be selected. But we offered up our suggestion to him. And we think he took to it well.
If you are interested in suggesting a name and team colors, obtaining season tickets, and following the news regarding the HBG-FC (or whatever the team will be named), check out the Indy Pro Soccer website.
Oh yeah, the Moon Walk thing…
Peter enjoys trivia night at pubs. And on this particular night, it was Burlesque Trivia at the Sinking Ship. The theme for trivia was “the 80’s” and we tied up with two other teams in round 3. To break the tie, a representative from each team had to come up on stage and do their best Moon Walk. My version sucked. But I finished with a falsetto “he he!” and a crotch thrust and that was enough to win. The prize was a 12 pack of Tab. And that shit is nasty.
