KOTBR #152 | Two from the Cellar and One for the Season

Some of you know how it goes.

This happens.

What do you do with all that beer?

The beer needs to breathe. It needs to visit multiple palates. Hoarding is bad. Sharing is good.

So sharing among the Knights of the Beer Roundtable it is on a brisk fall evening. Stoke the fire in the chiminea. Gather around the kitchen island with your tasting glasses, arms outstretched in anticipation of ales that you hope a bit of age has been kind to. And perhaps throw in a beer that goes with the season.

There's Tart of Darkness by The Bruery. Sour stouts are a rare thing, but rareness itself does not define a beer--or at least it should not define a beer, though some craft beer aficionados seem to think otherwise. So what to expect from a sour stout? Interestingly, not as much roasted chocolate as one might expect. The sour dominates here, with oak, cherries, and a little bit of vanilla coming through. In honor of Black Tuesday, we raise a glass of Black Tuesday's tart cousin.

Shmaltz Brewing Company's He'Brew's Jewbelation series is the product of a mission that some people might consider insane. The mission is this:  each year, release an anniversary ale. Each year, add one percent to the ABV, one malt to the grain bill, and one hop to the recipe.

Shmaltz started in 2004 with He'Brew Miraculous Jewbelation 8 on the brewery's eighth anniversary: 8% ABV, 8 malts, and 8 hops. This year marks the brewery's 17th anniversary, so they're releasing Jewbelation Reborn 17, with, yes, 17% ABV, 17 malts, and 17 hops.

Lunacy, you're thinking . . . how can this beer work? Well it works, and it works well--provided that you let the beer rest for at least a year.

So from the cellar comes last year's Jewbelation, Jewbelation Sweet 16. It nearly oozes into the glass like motor oil, and it's black like used motor oil, too. And then there's the blossoming of dark fruit notes--raisins, maybe a little bit of plum--floating over a cocoa-like foundation. Jewbelation Sweet 16 is indeed sweet and still a bit hot, perhaps too sweet and hot for some. But what should be a mess of a beer comes together--miraculously, one might say.

KOTBR Score: 3.75 Mugs

While sharing from the cellar is a good goal to target, one must consider the season as well. And the season brings pumpkin spice foods and drinks--the goddamn pumpkin spice foods and drinks. They're everywhere at this time of year. Blame Starbucks. They're the driver behind this incessant march toward pumpkin hell every fall.

So yes, it's a bit much. But it's not all bad. Take Southern Tier's Warlock. Rather than settle for a traditional pumpkin ale, Southern Tier decided to take an imperial stout and dress it up in a festive pumpkin vest. Do you like the combination of chocolate and pumpkin flavors? Then you'll want this particular beer, though the pumpkin notes are milder than you might get from a regular pumpkin beer. So pour yourself a Warlock, fire up your VCR, put in an episode of Sammy Terry archived on VHS, and enjoy.

What does the theme of "Deutschland" mean? It means that if you're so inclined, bring something German-themed: German beer, German food, German music, German whatever. Hell, you can wear lederhosen if you want to. Drink your beer out of a boot. Come dressed like Jürgen Klinsmann or Lou Bega (yes, Lou Bega is German). Bring an '80s-style boombox that you will use to play every album ever made by Kraftwerk. Whatever suits you. It'll be like a second Oktoberfest for 2013.

Craft Writing | Beer, The Digital, and Craft Culture

If you're into beer blogs, you might familiar with Jeff Rice's blog Make Mine Potato. We're regular readers because of Jeff's original voice in the craft beer world.

Jeff is also a professor at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, and he's put together an event that will be of interest to those who express their love of craft beer on the page and on the 'Net. The event is a symposium called Craft Writing | Beer, The Digital, and Craft Culture, which will feature New Albanian Brewing Company's Roger Baylor, Brooklyn Brewery's Garrett Oliver, and Shmaltz Brewing Company's Jeremy Cowan as speakers.

If you're interested in attending, here are the details from the symposium website:

Craft Writing | Beer, The Digital, and Craft Culture: A one day symposium at the University of Kentucky showcasing writing in craft beer.

      Saturday, February 15, 2014

Free and open to the public.

This one day event will bring to UK brewers and professional writers from the craft beer industry. Craft beer, the annual production of under six million barrels of beer by small breweries, is one of the fastest growing areas of the food industry. According to the Brewers Association, craft beer provides over 108,000 jobs and its retail dollar value in 2012 was estimated at $10.2 billion. In the last twenty years, over 2,000 new breweries have come online, commanding almost 6% of the overall American beer market. These breweries have, in turn, helped revitalize city neighborhoods, generated new jobs in related industries, and played a key role in expanding digital and social media usage.

This event will showcase the professional writing – in print and digital media – that is dominant in the craft beer industry. Writing has played a major role in promoting the business of craft beer. Craft Writing will serve as an event that draws interdisciplinary attention to the ways industry utilizes writing – in various digital forms – to promote, inform, highlight, argue, market, brand, and foster relationships between products, consumers, and other relevant parties.

KOTBR #151 | Comedy Night at Black Acre Brewing Company

      Good evening ladies and germs!

So a teenager goes to his parents and says, “I want to be a brewer when I grow up.” His parents reply, “Sorry kid, you can’t have both.”

A drunk was in front of a judge. The judge says, "You've been brought here for drinking." The drunk says, "Okay, let's get started."

      This is for Jim…

Why don’t Jewish mothers drink? Alcohol interferes with their suffering.

Okay, this one is for Mike…

What is the difference between Amy Winehouse and Captain Morgan? Captain Morgan comes alive when you add Coke!

Okay, I’m no Milton Berle and this is not the Catskills. But Indianapolis is not joking when it comes to good beer. And Black Acre Brewing Company (5632 E. Washington St., blackacrebrewing.com) is a seriously good neighborhood bar and brewery.

Speaking of jokes, we decided to bring back roundtable ratings. Sorta.

We tried to pick a Black Acre beer to review, but we were too busy drinking their variety of beers that we could not decide on one. So we rated a whole lot of them.

      Jason:
      Hop Pun Double IPA
Ahh, a beer in his natural habitat: Black Acre Brewery. So why don’t beers wear shoes? Because they have beer feet! What do you get when you pour beer in your mother’s shoes? A spanking! Hey everybody, Hop Puns are on the house! But be careful, we just had the roof re-tarred!
      Rating: 5 wacka wacka wackas

      Mike:
      Mr. Caulfield Rye Wheat Ale
If you are Holden a pint of this beer, you will not find any phony qualities. Thankfully, you won’t have to wait for a world renowned author to die to order another one.
      Rating: 4 new Salinger stories

      Jim:
      Citra Pale Ale
Holy hop bomb Batman! The pale ale leaves a POW! in your mouth but, like a boomerang, you will be coming back for more. Same Black Acre time, Same Black Acre channel!
      Rating: 4.5 Batarangs

      Rye Stout
One drink of this beer and you will feel like you are riding in a Chrysler Cordoba, complete with soft Corinthian leather. One drink and it will forever be tattooed on your brain and taste buds. It is complex, not de plane! If you want to order one, then you certainly KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN! Rating: 3.95 Ricardo Montalbans

      Hop Pun Double IPA
Ooh! Ooh ooh! That was ver-ry impressive, Mister Black Acr-r-r-re!
      Rating: 4.2 Horshacks

      Gina:
      Citra Pale Ale
You know, this would be funnier if it were Simcoe Pale Ale, but it’s not. It is Citra Pale Ale with its fruity and citrusy characteristics. But let’s be serious for a moment. Ever since Bob Barker left the air, the animal population has skyrocketed. Nobody is spaying or neutering their animals. When there are that many extra pets, it means only one thing: deeply discounted prices on Chinese food. Good for the Jews at Christmas; bad for cat and dog lovers. Unless they love the taste of cats and dogs.
      Rating: 3.5 feral cats

      Meg:
      Nit Wit Belgian Witbier
      You are in a bar.
      I order a beer.
The bartender serves you a beer.
      I drink the beer.
      Rating: 4 d20's

      Knock knock.
      Who’s there?
      Black Acre’s guest tap list.
Black Acre’s guest tap list who?
Black Acre’s guest tap list is not a joke, so there’s no punch line, son. They had Bloomington Brewing Company’s 10 Speed on tap. It is an American Pale Wheat Ale that many of us have been enjoying. A lot. So we decided to review it.

So we drank the beer. And enjoyed it. And forgot to write down notes. So the biggest joke of all is that we are a “beer” blog. But I digress…

Bloomington’s 10 Speed is better than any bike ridden by Cru Jones or Dave Stoller. It is listed as a specialty beer on their website. But hopefully they will upgrade it to the regular lineup because the subtle fruit notes and wheat base combination rivals any other hoppy wheat produced in the state.

No, that is not a joke.

If you happen upon a cask of 10 Speed on pineapple, drink it up. Every. Last. Drop.

      Ratings:
      Chris: 3.9 gear boxes
      Gina: 4.25 sprockets
      Meg: 3.75 sparkly vampires
      Mike: 4.25 huevos rancheros
      Jason: 4.25 whoopee cushions
      Jim: 4.1 gong shows
