Random Beer Roundup - The Rain's Not Stopping Edition

Last weekend's trip to Kings Island was a great time and I even got a Jungle Jim's trip in on the way. I picked up some delicious offerings, including a couple coffee beers. I'm so happy that it's that time again and I would love nothing more than to see those styles offered year-round (Sun King's Java Mac is tasting great, btw). Anyway, I talk about coffee beer a lot so I'll shut up now.

Next week, Mike and I will be in southern Michigan on a much needed vacation. We're hoping to check out a few brewpubs and bars on our journey. We've got a few stops planned (Founder's, Hopcat, Bell's, Big Rock Chop House, and Kuhnhenn's for sure) Anything else we shouldn't miss? The roundup next week should go on without a hitch, hopefully.

If there is something coming up that is not listed, we would love to hear about it. News, reviews, info, etc., to share for our next Random Beer Roundup can be submitted to hoosierbeergeek@gmail.com.

So, grab your umbrella. This is the Random Beer Roundup.

Sandkerwa is still going strong with Mahrs Lager, Weissenohe Monk's Fest, Kulmbacher Weiss, along with four gravity kegs this weekend. We'll also keep a couple stateside fall seasonals pouring, currently Pyramid Juggernaut and Three Floyds Munsterfest, but look for Rogue Maierfest and Two Brothers Pumpkin to be appearing this weekend or early next week.

Half Moon Octoberfest on tap!
O.G.=1.061 ABV=6.05% IBU=31

From Charles at Upland Brewing Co. in Bloomington:

Currently on tap (in addition to our year-around beer selection)

Oktoberfest -A Bavarian-style lager with a rich, amber hue and a malty sweetness. All-German malts with rare German hops are used to make it authentic in style. The crisp, hop finish tops off this delicious brew. Our best-selling seasonal. Available in bottles and draught. 6.8% ABV, 16.5 IBUs, 15.8 Starting Gravity

Weizenbock - A powerful dark wheat beer in the German tradition. Draught only, limited availability. 7.5% ABV

Double Dragonfly IPA - The big brother of our Dragonfly IPA. The IBUs in this brew pack a powerful punch (not to mention the ABV), but likes its little sibling, the Double Dragonfly is very well balanced by a strong malt character. 9.1% ABV, 80+ IBUs, 21.0 Staring Gravity

Upcoming beers

Schwarz (black lager) -Release: Oct. 10 - Our German-style schwarzbier, or black lager, is dark in color; but you shouldn’t always believe your eyes, as it is unexpectedly light in body. This brew has very light hints of chocolate and coffee from the dark malt, making it perfect for the fall and winter months. Available in bottles and draught. New for 2009. 5.0% ABV, 25.3 IBUs, 12.0 Starting Gravity

Winter Warmer - Release: Nov. 9 - A barleywine with a very dark color achieved through a long boil. The finest British and American malts are used to create a large malt character. Rich fruit flavors and aromas are balanced by a hoppy taste and lingering finish. Silver Award Winner 2008 World Beer Cup “Old Ale” category. Available in bottles and draught. 9.0%ABV, 46.7 IBUs, 20.4 Starting Gravity

  1. Gina,

You should check out Jolly Pumpkin Brewery while in Michigan. I have adored everything of theirs that I have tried and would love to hear some first hand accounts from the Knights. Madrugada Obscura in praticular was delightful.

  2. Martin,

I know the Dexter facility is closed right now, and I think that is the closest one on our route.

Thanks for the reminder, I'll check again.

  5. If you haven't finish up your Michigan tour... If your route includes Bell's in Kalamazoo and a few in Grand Rapids, swing over to the coast and hit The Livery in Benton Harbor. Great place...big selection. Be sure to ask for the history and tour of the place. It was a horse livery back in the day!

  6. Walter,

We wanted very much to head over there, but our time didn't allow. We've heard a lot of great things about them!

We are hoping to do a trip along the coast that will include Livery, New Holland, up north to Short's and a few others sometime soon.

    Gina
