KOTBR #144 | Of Tridents and Horses

On Wednesday, August 29, beloved Indy beer bar Twenty Tap celebrated its first anniversary. And where were these ace reporters? We were...not there. While we heard that the party at Twenty Tap was fantastic, we were trying to broaden our craft beer experiences in this town. So we opted for a visit to the Winner's Circle Pub, Hoosier Park's off-track betting establishment, because we'd heard great things about their tap list. And besides, who doesn't want to experience the thrill of betting on horse races and the splendor of a lit bar top...that changes colors!

We were pleased to see that all of the tap handles save for one were reserved for craft selections, and most of them were local selections (among them Oaken Barrel, Flat12, and Sun King). Looking yet again to expand our local beer horizons, we decided to review one of Triton Brewing's flagship beers, Deadeye Stout. Triton's brewery also happens to be in a refurbished horse barn, so perhaps we just had horses on the brain.

When the HBG crew suggested that we have our next roundtable at Winner's Circle OTB downtown, I was a little more than apprehensive. Would we be reviewing Blue Moon while losing our paychecks on Space Jam and The Letter P? As it turns out, Winner's Circle has a great selection of local craft beer and absolutely no Bud, Miller or Coors on tap (although they may have had Blue Moon). While I was still empowered to lose my paycheck through off-track betting, the psychedelic colors of the bar held my attention long enough to avoid betting on Scorpion Juice. As if 100 TVs and a broad selection of Indiana beer wasn't enough, $4 pints certainly sold me on this place. And that wasn't even a special, the special was $3 pints on Sundays.

From the selections, we decided on Triton's Deadeye Stout. In retrospect, this was a terrible choice because the dark beer couldn't refract the colors of the bar. It's a good thing I enjoyed the beer enough to detract from my fascination with red, blue, and green. Deadeye Stout plays a convincing role of a chocolate stout before it reaches your mouth, with heavy aromas of dark chocolate and roasted malt. I'm pretty sure Deadeye Stout isn't a chocolate stout, but it certainly tastes like one, or perhaps a chocolaty sweet stout. Milk chocolate, cocoa nibs, and a hint of toast are all easy to pick out in the dark, sweet liquid. As dessert-like as I make it sound, Deadeye doesn't end up being too sweet, maintaining a nice drinkable balance in its sweetness and heavy body. It seems that many Indiana brewers have refrained from keeping a stout on their year-round tap list, so it's nice to find that Triton is bucking that trend. This was a very enjoyable beer and will be even more satisfying once the temperature starts to drop in a few months. 3.60 Mugs.

I've never been to Vegas and I'm not much of a gambler, but I'm guessing that many of the venues there have a similar vibe to Winner's Circle. Over the top colors and sounds and the occasional burst of excitement (or frustration, depending on the outcome) from the crowd keep you entertained even if you aren't betting on the ponies. Best of all, they keep a heavy rotation of local beer on tap.

Our selection for review was the Deadeye Stout from Triton. Seemingly a lighter stout as far as mouthfeel and texture, but a load of flavor really made this a pleasant and drinkable beer. Chocolate, roasty coffee, and caramel mingled about in a nice, black haze. 3.20 Mugs.

Tailgate for Nothing 7: Wiener Time!

Our biannual Tailgate for Nothing is probably our favorite event. Incredibly, we've done six editions of the event. And yes, we are having a seventh.

The Hoosier Beer Geek Knights of the Beer Roundtable invite you to join us for--

TFN7: Wiener Time!
Saturday, November 3, 11 a.m. - ???
Back parking lot of the Sun King Brewery
135 N. College, Indy

Before I get into the whole "Tailgate for Nothing is a shared event" spiel, I want to point out the theme.

WIENER TIME!

Sure, there's always beer at Tailgate for Nothing. Lots and lots and lots of beer. And yes, you're absolutely welcome to bring whatever food you'd like. But we like a theme. So while your beer doesn't or even shouldn't be wiener-themed, we hope that your food will be. Any kind of meat in tube form will do--not just wieners. And yes, vegetarians and vegans, please come with your innovative and tasty food creations. I'm a vegetarian and plan to pull out all the stops. For example, seitan sausage counts. Tofu sausage counts. Lettuce sausage counts. Hell, why not try to make a falafel-dog? Just as long as it tastes good and you can share it, you're welcome to come. Keep in mind that you don't have to bring sausage, but it would be cool if you did.

Event Info. What's Tailgate for Nothing (TFN)? All six HBG Knights of the Beer Roundtable are fans of the act of tailgating. It occurred to us that tailgating usually revolves around sporting events, but why should it have to? Getting together with friends, eating hearty and/or unhealthy foods, drinking beer, and just hanging out -- these are ideas we can all get behind.

TFN is exactly that: a tailgate for nothing. It's an opportunity for people to wheel out their everyday great beer, or the beer they never have an excuse to drink and to share it with like-minded individuals who are sure to appreciate what they are drinking.

TFN will be done in a traditional tailgate manner: bring your own everything (tailgate, beer, food, trash bags, chairs, bbq grills, games, falafel-dogs, whatever), cook and eat in a parking lot, and in the end, clean up after yourself. The main ideas are to share food and drink, hang out, and have a good time. You're also welcome to bring kids and/or dogs. And falafel-dogs. We especially welcome dogs that bring beer and falafel-dogs. Unfortunately it's illegal for kids to bring beer. Someday...

Why the theme of "Wiener Time!"? Because themes with exclamation points are annoying. Because our first TFN featured Coddogs. Because Jason is obsessed with wieners--*really* obsessed with wieners. Because sausages are easy to make--just grill 'em and stick 'em in a bun. Because as noted above, vegetarians and vegans will have to get creative.

Nota bene: This is a *no freeloaders* event; please bring food and beer with you. If you don't have a giant special beer, that's not a problem. Just make sure that you bring something tasty. This isn't a rare beer contest. It's just a good time. Also, it won't cost you anything to attend.

What to bring (aside from food and beer):

Tasting glasses - If you have any tasting glasses from former beer events, bring them along. There should be a lot of beer to share, and the smaller glasses are the best way to go about sharing.

Chairs - There won't be seating unless you bring some.

A canopy - We're not saying that it's going to rain at TFN7, but you never know. So if you don't want to get wet or sunburned, bring a canopy if you have one.

Friends - BRING FRIENDS. Hopefully you'll be making some, but it never hurts to have a posse. We do our best to be friendly and get to know everyone, but this is just gonna be a bunch of people hanging out.

Finally, we know that the date of TFN7 is also the date of various and sundry other events, such AHA's Teach a Friend to Homebrew Day and Indy's Monumental Marathon. That being said, based on past TFNs, the event probably won't end until sundown at the earliest. Therefore, even if you have something else going on that day, please come out and celebrate with us. And if you're a homebrewer, feel free to bring out your equipment and brew. We had several homebrewers come out last year for TFN5, and they brewed on site.

ANY QUESTIONS? Leave a comment. Planning to attend? Leave a comment. Don't want to leave a comment? Don't let that stop you from attending. We'll be there no matter what.

Hi Food and Wine Friends,

Greekfest 2012 is this weekend - Friday, September 7, 4 - 11 p.m. and Saturday, September 8, noon - 11 p.m.

GreekFest 2012 features wines of exceptional quality this year that were chosen based on how well they pair with our menu, and how they simply stand alone as refined and delicious. The wines also reflect traditional Greek wine heritage. One of those selections, St. John Commandaria, is said to be the oldest continuously produced wine in the world...and it's amazing.

Please check out our full menu and wine list at www.IndyGreekFest.org. We will also be serving a selection of Sun King beers - Yum!

We'll see you all at GreekFest 2012 this weekend to enjoy not only live Greek music, traditional dancing, Church tours, but the fresh and authentic Greek foods that represent our Greek heritage.

From Mike at Brew Bracket:
Brew Bracket Bourbon Barrel Aged Beer Tournament (BBBourbon)

What makes this one special:
The beers are aged in bourbon barrels from Harrison Bourbon. Indiana beers slowly soaking in the flavor of an Indiana bourbon. It doesn’t get any better than that. The style for the brewers is wide open for any beer they feel would be enhanced with a several month barrel soak. The event will be held at Tomlinson Tap on Saturday, September 29th, as an anchor to National Bourbon Heritage month.

This event will run in a similar format to our standard tournaments. We’re featuring 8 brewers instead of the usual 16. We’ll actually be delivering the beer to the participants at their table and pouring it there, to keep a fun social element with the smaller crowd. Between rounds we’ll offer tastings of Harrison Bourbon to compliment the beers being tasted.

Event Details:
Saturday September 29th, 6-9PM
Tomlinson Tap Room in the City Market, Indianapolis
Ticket price: $45 (early bird special of $40 through July 29)
Tickets available here (http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/258994)

BB101:
Brew Bracket is the only one of its kind, a true tasting tournament for local craft beer. Participating brewers bring a similar style of beer for each event and are seeded randomly into a bracket. Participants blindly taste the beer 2 glasses at a time and vote for their favorites based on taste alone. Over the course of the day winning beers advance through the tournament until a “best beer” is selected at the end of the event.
