Before Canvitational, Get To Know - Sixpoint

Canvitational is only ten sleeps away!  We wanted to get to know each of the participating breweries a little better, so we sent out a six pack questionnaire to each of them. Now, we get to share their answers with you. 

Next up is Pete Dickson, head brewer at Sixpoint Brewery in Brooklyn, NY. 

Sixpoint opened in 2004 in a 800 square foot garage located in Red Hook, a then rundown neighborhood of Brooklyn. They are big into the history and culture of beer - you have to check out their Beer is Culture page- and their logo is derived from the Brewer's Star. Sixpoint doesn't care too much for the labeling of beer styles; they strive to brew beer that cannot be defined.

Sweet Action - The original Sixpoint style- hard to define, but perhaps that's why people love it. Part pale ale, part wheat, part cream ale- all Sweet Action.

Resin - A beer that celebrates the extraction of hop resin for a concentrated yet balanced brew.

Righteous Ale - Made with Rye malt to provide a signature and distinct earthy character. Seasoned and dry-hopped with herbal and citrus hops. Truly Righteous.

Now, we'll hand it over to Pete:

1. What music do you hear most often on the brew deck?  

 Queens of the Stone Age, Led Zeppelin, Them Crooked Vultures... 

2. What's your brewing mission? What are you trying to accomplish with your beer?

High quality brews made practically & pragmatically.

3. How many beards can be found in the brewery on any given day?

In a house of three, you'll shall find two beards. - But I suspect it would be three if Heather had facial hair... And I'm pretty sure she's happy that she doesn't. ;-)

4. Which beers outside of your own do you enjoy? What beer do you wish you came up with? Why?

I'm constantly trying new beers. There's so many craft brews to try, it's hard to not ask for what is new to you. I haven't found I beer yet that I wish I had made first. Part of what makes a beer so great is where and when you have it for the first time and see what it's all about. Making it yourself - you would have already seen behind the curtain. I think it would spoil the pleasant surprise a little.

5. What's your go-to shift beer after a long day brewing?

What ever is on the kegerator! ;-)

6. What do you drink when you aren't drinking beer?  Are you on #teamradler?

Water & Wine. What's a teamradler?!

What is the Canvitational?

On Saturday, September 28th, 2013, the inaugural CANvitational will enlighten patrons to sample craft beer from award winning breweries from across the USA, enjoy local Indy eats provided by food trucks and music (DJ Helicon and DJ Action Jackson), in an urban downtown atmosphere.

Tickets are available and the event will feature some familiar breweries, as well as many out of state.  You can find more information about them and the event at http://canvitational.com/.

Our Fall event features Oktoberfest style beers from 8 incredible local Indiana breweries.

The event will be held at Tomlinson Tap Room, where we'll bring the beer to you at your table. Included in the ticket are all 7 rounds of side by side tastings, samples from a couple home brewers showcasing their take on the style, entry into an incredible door prize raffle, and a half pint of your choice at the end of the event.

Participating brewers include Upland, Flat 12, Bier, Twisted Crew, RAM, Granite City, Iechyd Da, and #BBPales winner Thr3e Wisemen.

A portion of ticket sales will be donated directly to King Park Area Development Corporation (www.kpadc.org)

This is a 21+ event only. ID is required at the door. Designated driver tickets include free soda and water at the event. Additional food will be available for purchase through City Market vendors. Come join us for some great times with an intimate beer crowd tasting some limited edition Oktoberfest style beers.

Before Canvitational, Get To Know - West Sixth

We are getting pretty excited for the upcoming Canvitational event happening later this month and we are VERY impressed with the brewery lineup.  We want to get to know each of the participating breweries a little bit better.  So, we've sent out a six pack questionnaire to each of them and we wanted to share them with you. 

Next up is Ben Self, owner and brewer at West Sixth Brewing in Lexington, KY.

West Sixth opened in Lexington at the site of the old Rainbo Bread Factory in 2012.  The building now houses the brewery, along with other community minded organizations including a coffee roaster, a bike shop, a roller derby team among others. That's pretty cool.

Look for them and the following beers at the event.

West Sixth IPA - There’s a lot going on here, with citrus as the obvious star.  Over the backbone of bready malt and pine stickiness you will find notes of peaches, lemon zest, dank grassiness, pine needles, and tangerines..

West Sixth Amber - Stunning in color, the West Sixth Amber (also known at the Deliberation Amber in our taproom) is perhaps our most beautiful looking beer.

Now, without further ado, here's Ben - 

1. What music do you hear most often on the brew deck?  

Most frequent music?  Maybe some good 70s rock 

2. What's your brewing mission? What are you trying to accomplish with your beer?

Our mission as a brewery is to produce top notch beers while also being a brewery that measures its success not only by the beer, but also by how we can help our community.

3. How many beards can be found in the brewery on any given day?

We're pretty beard-scarce.  There are usually 3 or 4 in the brewery and taproom, which is about 1/3 of the folks around here.

4. Which beers outside of your own do you enjoy? What beer do you wish you came up with? Why?

I love the beers that some of our other local breweries are doing -- like Country Boy Brewing.

5. What's your go-to shift beer after a long day brewing?

I always love enjoying whatever we have that is new, but for me I always end up back at our IPA.

6. What do you drink when you aren't drinking beer?  Are you on #teamradler?

We're in the heart of bourbon country, so if I'm not drinking a beer, I'm drinking a bourbon.  You can also find some Noah's Mill in my cabinet, along with some of the other small batch bourbons.
